Hypnopomic dream about breast cancer, should I be concerned?

About a month ago I had a strange dream or thought right before I woke up, I think it was a hypnopompic hallucination but I’m not entirely sure...

In the middle of the night I was half woken up by this pain in my breast so I rolled over and massaged it with my hand, as I was doing so I started to feel an imaginary lump and thought of breast cancer, that is when I woke up. Normally I’d think it’s just a dream but the week after I did a report on a lady who saw her breast cancer though a dream and now I’m horribly worried for my health, I hope that’s not silly.

A few things could have caused this to happen to me:

-The pain I felt was defiantly because of PMS, so I was very sore.

-I was messaging my breast near this lump in my armpit I got from shaving in the shower so I had that in mind

-I found out my friends mom had breast cancer the day before.

This dream has caused a lot of anxiety in me, that report I had to do didn’t help. Should I be concerned at all? I’m only 20 and I had a breast exam done and my doctor told me I was fine but my anxiety is causing me to be unsure. What should I do? Thank you for your answer!

You say you had a "breast exam" done. What do you mean by this? Did the doctor just feel your breast or did you actually have a mammogram (breast X-ray) done? If it's the latter and it came out clear then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

It's unlikely you have cancer if your doctor didn't find anything on feeling your breast either. However, if you didn't have a mammogram, then try and get one done just to allay your anxiety - though I realise this will be difficult at your age if you're in the UK.

All that being said, I do think it sounds as if this is just anxiety. We all dream that we have cancer or some other terrible illness from time to time. I've had dreams like that all my life and I've made it well into my 70s without getting anything! It's normal to play out our day-to-day anxieties in our dreams.

Thank you for your reply, I’m glad I’m not the only one with dreams like this, I had a regular breast exam done with my doctor (she just felt my breasts). I don’t think I will be getting a mammogram anytime soon becasue I’m still a teen and I hear mammograms come back very messy with people my age, I also have a very flat chest so I wouldn’t be able to have a regular mammogram anyways.

For now I will just focus on keeping my stress levels down, have a good day!

You're quite right about mammos not being much use for people your age. It is indeed true that in very young women breast tissue is so dense, you can't make sense of the results anyway. At your age, just feeling the breasts carefully is actually a better method. And there's nothing to stop you carrying out regular breast examinations on yourself. That's what I do. No need to get obsessive about it though - once a month is enough, and preferably not in the run-up to your period when, as you rightly say, your breasts can get a bit hard and lumpy anyway.

You're also on the right track about working on your anxiety levels.

      Good luck,

      Lily
