Hypothyroidism also known as Graves Disease

Does anyone have any experience of this. I know there's another group to do with it but I don't want to join as it's my daughter in law who has it and is struggling. I'll tell her about the other group but it seems to be some of her symptoms are the same as being a PMR sufferer and withdrawn too quickly off the steroid especially the shaking. She's under consultants for it but they seem at a loss as to why the steroid isn't working. If anyone can give me some guidance so  I can make suggestions to her as to what to say to the consultants I'd be grateful

One of the rule-outs when a PMR diagnosis is made is thyroid disorders. But I'm not sure I would expect steroids to relieve those aches and pains - it is the thyroid function that must be sorted.

She is still under consultants but but although seeing her nearly every week they seem at a loss as to how to sort but thanks for replying. I've pointed her in the direction of the Graves group

      HI

I have hypothyroidism not Graves and hat it @5 years before PMR.  I am on 75 mg levothyroxine for that and down to 1 or 2 mg presnisolone for the PMR.   Both immun defiecient diseases.   No symptoms for hypothy other than high cholesterol noted in blood test.  Best of luck.

Are they real specialists in autoimmune endocrinology?

I think you should go ahead and join the Graves forum as you will find more people there with experience of the disease than here.  Not all the forums are as active as PMR so you won't be overwhelmed!

Graves’ disease is hyperthyroidism, not hypothyroidism, they have very different symptoms. If your DIL is shaking, then i’m Inclined to think she does has Graves, which is too much thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is too little thyroid, which is what I have. They are not treated the same. Hypothyroidism is more common and easier to treat, you take thyroid hormones. Hyperthyroidism is more serious, because too much hormone can lead to health problems. I think it’s treated by removing the thyroid, or zapping it with radiation. If it’s removed, then you become hypothyroid and need replacement hormones. I also went through two years of PMR, and aside from the fatigue, the symptoms are different.

yes iit is the hyperthyroidism she has they try treating it first with steroid to take the eye swelling down then if that doesn't work with radiation and then if that doesn't work remove the thyroid.

The eye swelling is a symptom of Graves’ disease, i don’t know if the steroids will help with that. They need to address the overactive thyroid.
