Hysterectomy

Hi,

I am waiting for the date for the total hysterectomy with open surgery. I have been thinking this more than a year, ....

I was wondering how that it feels after hysterectomy, as i will be menopause after hysterectomy.

I am very anxious that i want it to be done and make my life better, but in the other side, i am so scared that i will be having open surgery and i will be menopause.

Hi I had a total hysterectomy and immediate menopause. If I think back I would advise researching possible menopausal symptoms a bit more deeply so that I was more prepared for ongoing problems I suffer from and what if any Hrt I might prefer. There a so many and menopausal symptoms vary person to person and there are lots of choices to make. Immediate menopause started for me within a week and 2 years on whereas others have sailed through. As for surgery I found I was quite calm as worrying won't change anything only stressed and slowing down after to recover is inevitable. Lots of rest and don't do too much or you will spend longer recovering in the end. Have a box by the bed with everything to hand to save keep getting up and down ie magazines, medication, hand cream etc. If your worried about your stomach muscles I exercised beforehand and this seems to have saved mine a bit.

    Good luck :-)

A total hysterectomy does not mean your ovaries are removed, that would be an oophorectomy if they were along with a total (womb and cervix) or partial (womb only) hysterectomy.

I assumed she had meant that as she had said she will be in menopause. I assumed a Dr had told her that as that's what I was told when I had the oopheorectomy.

      Hi Tracy,

Thank you for your reply and your advice.

Yes, i will buy some magazines and cellphone handy.

By the way, what kind of exercise beforehand that you did? Maybe it will help me alot too.

Right now i am just waiting for the surgery date, but they said likely possibility in the fall this year.

My gyn said i will be in the hospital for 2 nights, and probably the side effects are difficulty in bladder and bowel things. Do you have any advice for make easily to go to washroom after surgery? Like maybe special foods or something?

      Thank you again

Hi lily I did simple abdominal toning exercises and pelvic floor as these are affected most. I just thought I would prepare them beforehand, I still do them every few days and my stomach is quite good. Im not sure if you meant going to the washroom as going to toilet after. If you did constipation was a big problem after and I had to have meds to help. I wish I had stocked up on Bran products and fruit in the house beforehand ready for it. I didn't really have any bladder issues but dont throw away your sanitary products you bleed/discharge for quite awhile after ( not heavily) I think mine was nearly a couple of weeks. I also recommend a good supply of baby wipes for a quick clean up for yourself and they are great in hospital. I used them to clean everything including the bathroom its not quite like being at home.

I hope it all goes smoothly for you. Thanks for clarfiying your surgery as there are various types as Matron has pointed out :-)

A total hysterectomy does not mean removal of your ovaries, it's removal of your womb and cervix. If you have a partial hysterectomy your cervix is left. An oophorectomy is your ovaries removed and if both are removed then you will go into a surgical menopause. Are you having your ovaries removed?

      Hi Matron,

Thank you for your reply, sorry i just answered now.

Yes, my ovaries will be removed as i have cysts in both of my ovaries, my cervix too. My gyn said if she leaves the cervix, i will get blessing sometimes after surgery. So basically it will be empty in my stomach 😣

I also had a total hysteretomy overys as well, I had trouble for over three years so at beginning of this year decided with my specialist that this was the only way, so I had my op on 4th of may this year and now I'm nearly 6 weeks pro op, I was in hospital for 3 days then came home and lots of rest and did it all on paracetamol, I also had the open surgery and had my cut glued together no stitches just all inside which will go onthere own. I had no problems apart from a uti in 4th week and I had numbness on my left leg at the top which might comeback and might not but that's all normal.  I'm 41 so I'm on HRT on the patches 25mg, I get no night sweats nothing, it was a hard decision about which way to go with HRT risks and all but was better to be on than nothing, didn't want tablets as go to liver so that's why I have patches, you will feel so much better when over and done with I was same as you very worried but I was ok and so will you. Hope all goes ok for you x em x
