hysterectomy for a complex cyst?

Hi I am 43 I have a complex cyst on one ovary and a simple cyst on the other each 7cm. My CA125 was 58. Complex is an endometrioma. When I went to my fast track apt Dr suggested a hysterectomy as a matter of course. I do not have any children. I would like to but I know my chances are very slim. I have been tremendously upset at the thought of a hysterectomy  because I do not have children and I do not want invasive radical surgery and its associated pain, I would feel less of a woman and I am worried it would spoil a sex life. My mental health deteriorated at the thought. I have fought the hospital and another surgeon has agreed to try to just remove the cysts. Have I done the right thing? I have very bad endometriosis and only have another 7 years until menopause. My endometriosis stopped causing me pain 9 yrs ago after 24 years of pain. Many thanks this forum is great.

    definitely seek another opinion! I am 44 no children and like you said chances are slim but don't want it taken away unnecessarily.

     My consultant wants to remove my ovaries when all I thought I was getting was a cystectomy, when I queried this he backed down and said if I changed my mind he would remove ovaries as well when he does cystectomy.  After hours and hours on the net, reading and worrying, and half an hour with my GP she agreed with me better to conserve ovaries if possible.

      Gosh we are in exact same position then. I am now going to have cystectomy but could loose ovaries if the cysts are too hard to remove. They should have agreed to try to conserve your ovaries from the start. I have seen the op on youtube and it is fiddely. It is so much easier to just cut cyst and ovary off but we are people. Chances of pregnancy are slim but it does happen. I wish you luck please let me know how you get on. I hope op is a complete success. Hope to have mine soon. I look pregnant my abdomen is exactly the shape of 8 months pregnancy its disturbing. Thanks

      The guidlines state that in pre menopuasal women every effort should be made to conserve the ovaries and that removal is last resort not first option

      Drs aren't the most forthcoming so had to do alot of research, glad can now pass that on to help guide someone else.

      Even NHS Choices website states:- 'Your surgeon will try to preserve as much of your reproductive system as possible." 

      Removal of the cyst only is known as an ovarian cystectomy.'

      Good luck with yours too Sam.  I have a date for pre-op but not actual operation yet.  I have had to agree that if because of postion of cysts that they can take ovary if unable to conserve, having another ultrasound week before pre-op to see if they have changed at all.
