Hysterectomy op due soon

Posted , 2 users are following.

Hi everyone. I am due to have an abdominal full hysterectomy, due to very large fibroids. Its been put off because of my tendency to be prone to ear, nose and throat infections. I've had a cold and a chesty cough and been generally unwell since christmas. Im getting better now but feel so unfit because I have not been as active as I should. This is making me a little wary of the operation and anaesthetic in case of complications. I am 61 years old and apparently its unusual for a post menopausal woman of my age to need this operation.

Hello, just to say, I had an abdominal hysterectomy and its the best thing I ever did.. It was frustrating for a while afterwards, not being allowed to do lifting etc. but once I had recovered and was able to drive again, I felt like a new person. I have never regretted it. Dont worry about the anaesthetic, you will be checked beforehand and all will be fine.

All the best, wishing you a speedy recovery..

    Bess.

I don't think that it is that unusual. Removing the fibroids usually stops excessive bleeding. Excessive bleeding can cause one to feel extremely tired. My mother-in-law had a hysterectomy. She shared a hospital room with a woman who already had her's done "years ago" but was in for other reasons. "Never missed it!" My mother-in-law thought that she would be less a woman cause she was thinking "old school" and a woman's best asset was her womb. She never missed it. She is now 4 years shy of 90 and I forgot that it had been removed. No one actually thinks about does she or doesn't she. Like tonsils...it is not that important at 61. The put off cause of the cold is not for your benefit...the hospital does not want the whole hospital and staff coming down with a cold. You having a cold will not make a difference in the operation. Hope you feel better soon. And, remember, even men, will feel a down turn or depression after operations. It is said that the body grieves the pain...LATER...when it is up to grieving. So, if you get a little depressed after the operation tell yourself, "I must be feeling better."

Hi, thank you for your comments. I am not worried about the operation in itself. I just haven't seen anyone in my age group comment or tell of their experience. I was just worried about being well enough to cope with surgery, because the older you are the more risk of complications I assume. I probably should have headed my post with the title 'Full abdominal hysterectomy surgery at 61'.
