I am 24 years old and I have been experiencing the Bartholin's Cyst for about 5 years now . I Often ( every 3 month's ) get these things re-occuring. Mine is always the size of a Tomato. These things are very painful and tender. I could not sit or walk each time I get them. The first time I went the doctor was very rude and uncaring .He lanced the cyst and stuffed it with a gauze to keep the hole from closing . About 3 months later Im back in the ER for the same thing .This time the doctor was very caring and nice he numbed me and then lanced the cyst and put in the ward Catheter. WOW! Felt like the worst day of my life .The was so uncomfortable. The doctor wanted me to keep the Catheter in for 1 month :headhurts: I could not handle it! The catheter fell out 1 week later! Yesterday I went to the ER and the doctor lanced the cyst and stuffed it with gauze and recommended me to have the surgery because I keep getting re-occuring acts to, to , often. I feel everybody's pain , Trust me I've been the the worst. So pray for me because I have a doctors appt. next week for the surgery. Good luck to you all and hopefully you won't have to experience this pain to much longer ! :D

I am replying to the 24 yr old lady who has suffered with this problem for so long, it is almost my story except I have had this problem now for 6 yrs with no diagnosis from Doctors, Specialists etc, untill this week I found a lump to my right side and saw a different Doctor and said I could no longer stand the pain and discomfort NO MORE, I am hopefully going to see a Specialist in the next 2 weeks all being well(which I might add I will have to pay private for as I am not prepaired to wait between 3-6 months for the NHS.)
In the last 6 yrs I have seen approx 5 different Doctors, 3 specialists all over the North of England, I have had a Laposcropy, numbing creams, steriods, mind numbing tablets, this is the short version, by now I would suspect my condition is so bad(infected) god only knows what they will find, when and if they open me up, I am at a stage now where all I want is my Life back and some normality, and No More Pain.
At least now I know I am not going mad, and hopefully will now be believed.
By what I have read about this condition I have come to the conclusion that my only option is surgery as I am not prepaired to carry on like this now I finally know what it is I have, to keep going back and forth to have it drained, that to me seems a complete and utter waste of time when they know full well it will keep reacurring, why do they put womwen through that time after time, have they know compassion?

1. If you do feel a painful swelling in side of the vagina, immediately book an appointment with the GP for the same or next day - don't wait for it to develop into a large abscess. If necessary, tell the receptionist that it is an EMERGENCY (because it is as it's very painful!) Antibiotics can stop the infection and it sometimes DOES just go away, and the swelling subsides. Take the antiobiotics at the proper time each day to ensure they work. That's not so bad. Do try regular hot baths, with Tea Tree oil in, to help reduce the cyst.
2. If you are worried that the swelling is not reacting to the medicine, immediately go back to the GP. Exaggerate the pain you are in if necessary and ASK to be referred to a gynaecologist. Ask the gynaecologist what to do in the event of a recurrence.
3. IF there's a large abscess at the side of the vagina, and it's excruciatingly painful, and swelling, or looking a bit yellow, then don't be worried about going to the A&E dpt of the hospital. Technically they should be able to drain it or give you a marsupialization. AT least once you;re there someone will attend to it - I find the GP does not really care much and just prescribes the antiobiotics and sends the patient away no matter how much pain they are in.
4. If it bursts, it will bleed for some time, but after the first few minutes the bleeding should diminish. If you are at all worried, use a sanitary pad and go to A&E and they will reassure you. Otherwise, get an emergency appointment with the GP - tell the receptionist you think you have a ruptured Bartholin's CYst and they will be suitably nervous to get you an emergency appointment!
Bartholin's cysts affect about 2% of unlucky women - and I sympathize with all of you I really do for I have had about 5 now, on both sides. Some women are prone to them, and when you are, it's really just bad luck. It also does have an impact on one's sex life too - that's only natural. If you use lots of artificial lubrication during intercourse that can help considerably to prevent another infection. Sometimes doing that can help psychologically. If you keep a diary you'll probably see that the cysts don't actually really ever come up as a direct result of having sex - they just come overnight sometimes, with no explanation, so try not to let it affect your sex life. I read somewhere that the condition technically lessenes after the age of 40 as menopause approaches, so take heart.
