I am 24years old Female.

I have not been well for a long time now, and in the last year and half i have felt things have become worse. I was told at the start they thought i had IBS, then a viral infection. Then they gave me tablets for excess acid. I had increase pain and tightness in chest area, sickness and nausea. I found it hard to sleep at night and things seem to be getting worse. I keep going to doctor and things didn't seem to be getting better or any easier. In June i had the endoscopy (Camera)down throat, which wasnt a very pleasent experience but pleased i did it. They diagnosed me with a Hiatus Hernia, and i came home. I was told to carry on with tablets which was increased from one morning and night, instead of one a day. I also had a stronger dose of sickness tablets. Which didn't seem to make a difference. I went back to doctor and explain things werent any better and it was really effecting me at work. I was having to come home as i was in pain at work and sick and very tired with not been able to sleep at night. This was stressing me out!!

On 21st Nov i went into hospital to have a tube down to check the acid Levels which the tube was down for 24hrs and also to check my muscle around me hernia, as they now believe i might have GERD. The result showed that my muscles around my hernia were not working and that might be why i was getting so much pain.

I have now been off work now for 4weeks as i am really struggling, and i am waiting results. I have been to see my GP, he believe an operation is the way forward as the tablets are now working and he can see i am getting stressed by this. So now i am just waiting for result and for hospital to get back in touch.

Not only does this condition hurt on the inside but also mentally as i feel very restricted in what i can do. I cant exercise as moving around makes me sick. I dont drink or really socialise as the smokey rooms effect me and i never know how i feel from day to day.

I am only hoping something can be done soon. From those people i have spoken to they have said that after having the operation they have never looked back!

It is very frustration, as you feel very helpless and i know i can be very negative at time and take things out on people close. I am very depressed now, but i know things will get better, but just when that the question i want to know.

From all the thing i have ever read about, it say you can get this from being over weight, smoke, stressed. I believe i may have been a little stressed, as my occupation i actually am very physical, or so i used to be till i was ill cause i am a Beauty and Holistic therapist, so i do alot of massage.

My friend who also does the same job has become ill and she is slowly getting seen by the hospital.

Please if anyone wants to know anything please dont hesitate to ask.

Many thanks for reading my long message and i wish everyone best of luck in getting health sorted.

Sarah

    :x Hi everyone.

Ok,to cut a VERY long story short.I suffered with bad acid reflux, sore throat on and off, heartburn and excruciating stomach ache for ages and ages.Saw GP,thought i had a hiatus hernia but needed to be confirmed.Had endoscopy,100% proof...yes,i had sliding hiatus herina.Had to have 24 hour acid test, then barium swallow, then another acid reflux test over 5 days in London, then back to see consultant.2 weeks later got results...acid reflux very severe,so instead of taking Lansoprazole for the rest of my life,i opted for surgery.Had the operation mid October....suffered after op with chronic food swllowing difficulties, pain, inability to burp etc etc.PLEASE be very cautionary when opting for surgery, get a good surgeon and get the post op expectations.I was not filled in properly with it all and am now still suffering 12 weeks later. This is considered a major op and as a patient,i wish i had NEVER had it done!! I would rather live with the acid reflux..thank you.

I still CANNOT burp, certain foods i can not swallow properly and now face a 'stretching' by balloon catheter of the stomach 'wrap'.GOOD LUCK if you opt for surgery but do not take it lightly.Either that,or i was just one of the unlucky ones.Any questions, feel free to ask!!

Hi, im a 23 year old female who for the last 9 months has been very very sick, i too went into hospital for an endoscope and found i had a moderate sized hietus hernia, inflammation of the stomach and duodeum, i am on tables which seems to work ok but i still have alot of trouble sleeping, i have been put on a very restrictive diet which i am keeping too.

i would like a lot of information about this as anything i read on the internet just says about heartburn and acid reflux-which i dont really get.

i was too thinking of having the operation but i think your doctor has to reccomend you for it, is this true? i would be afraid incase he didnt agree and i cant get it then?

    help

    Thank you

I am 25 and have just been diagnosed with a sliding hiatus hernia after an endoscopy. I'm glad I finally have an answer to all these horrible symptoms I have been having over the past year - constant burning oesophagus and throat & pressure/pain in abdomen.

I too have lost friends as I never feel like going out because of the pain I am in. I am grateful to read all your experiences as I don't know any one else my age who has this condition and nobody seems to understand how depressing it is.

I was wondering if anyone knows whether a sliding hiatus hernia can become strangulated. It worries me when the pain in my chest intensifies above its usual level. I have read that a strangulated hernia can be very serious.

After reading some of your experiences, it has given me some peace that I am not suffering alone.

For the past few nights I have to get up from bed.Lack of sleep is tiring me.

I have been suffering from Hiatus hernia for over 12 years.Tried mostly every medications..

I have had a ph 24 hours test, endoscopy etc. Having done endoscopy many times, I am now experiencing clausterphobia in lifts and even when watching a movie showing such a scene.

I am waiting to see my doctor after the long holidays, as will go for keyhole surgery. With all it's risk , I feel it would be better to go for surgery and suffer for a year than suffer for over 10years.

I can't sleep any longer sideways as get severe headaches, RHS chest pains, nausea.

All hot , spicy foods , beers, spirits are out.

I currently have a large lump at back of the throat and agonising pain which is worrying me as something critical.

I am looking to get operated by [color=orange:21d7c24732]*******[/color:21d7c24732] in Kent. Does anyone have any experience of a similar operation?

I will be gratefull to hear from anyone.

Hi all, I've investigated to see if I could get my Hiatus Hernia "wrapped" on the NHS, Sadly it's very very rare that they will do it now on the NHS purely due to cost's & it's not 100% repairable.

I looked into going private at a local private clinic, The Doctor I saw was just fantastic, very helpful indeed, he works at the private clinic 4 day's a week & 1 day for the NHS. He said he would be happy to treat me privately at the clinic & the cost would be in region of £4,000 - £6,000, but I would never be able to get it done on the NHS unless it became life threatening, when it becomes that bad it's too late, your "pipes" etc. have become so eroded with the acid.

He also explained it's not 100% successful, that you can still suffer with acid reflux & the "lump in the throat" sensation sometimes never goes away, you still have to watch your diet very carefully & alcohol is a complete No No. So I pretty much figured, why spend all that money & it may not be that much of an improvement. So like everyone else i'm plodding along with it & hoping for the best.

Hope this helps, & sorry it's not very positive news.
