I am 26 years old and have been struggling with pylo for 10 years.

Alot of the time i get put in the hospital and then put on oral antibiotics well alot of the time the drug doesn't work and i end up sicker than i was to begin with. The most important thing is make sure you are on a strong enough antibiotic or else you can get deathly ill.

Hi i'm 23 and ever since my first experience of kidney infection (which was extremely severe) i have suffered on and off with them. Sometimes they dissapear for periods of months and then all of a sudden reoccur. I am really worried as to what this may signify and if this means there is a more serious underlying problem. My symptoms include blood in the urine a temperature feeling sick and weak and confusion, also severe staaning pains through my abdomen into my lower back (especially when i urinate). I am increasingly worried as to why this is happening to me it causes me a lot of pain and discomfort and i feel that visits to the doctor for prescription antibiotics is not a long term sollution. Does anyone know if this could signify possible kidney failure? I have a history of kidney problems from my paternal side of the family (my father and my grandfather have died and had kidney tumours).

    Hello Sade

I think you must insist that your GP refers you to a urologist (kidney specialist) for further tests just to check there is no underlying problem and to put your mind at rest.

When I was your age I too suffered frequently from kidney infections leading to pylonephritis ....... further investigations showed no problems (despite kidney problems in my family too) and I have been fine ever since.

You are quite justified in asking for a referral in view of your family history. Good luck and don't worry.

    Hi Sade,

I to suffered from re-occurring urine infections, my doctor arranged for me to have an ultra sound scan and a radio isotope scan which showed my renal function was impaired. It resulted in my right kidney being removed, as nephritis had infected it so badly this is over 13 years ago now, I have had almost no infections since and lead a normal life with one kidneyI am monitored six monthly which is very reassuring. I would strongly suggest you ask to have your condition investigated further. It certainly doesn't mean kidney failure, but if there is a problem it will be much better for you if it is managed and treated.

    Good lucki
