I am 36 year old male with a severely swollen salivary gland on the right hand side of my neck. I can remember as far back as when I was 17, going to my doctor with suspected tonsilitis only on the right hand side. This went on for a couple of years, then everything calmed down until just about a year ago. Every time I ate or drunk something, the right side of my neck became really itchy. My friends and family used to laugh at me poking my finger into my neck to try and find the itch. I had a cat scan done at my local hospital (Ninewells Hospital, Dundee) and the specialist said that there was a stone (9mm), but too small to do anything about. Eventually, one day a couple of months ago, I ate something, and the side of my neck started swelling up and it was very painful. It was so painful, I began to have a fear of eating. I opted for eating srambled eggs as fast as I could before it got too painful. I visited the doctor, who very quickly prescribed me penicillin. After a week I was back again asking for more. I was given a stronger dose. After another seven days, I was back again as i was going on holiday. As soon as I came back from holiday, after eating only soup and rice for a week, I was straight back at the doctor's again. He immediately referred me to the ENT clinic at the hospital (Western General, Edinburgh). They gave me MORE penicillin and I was referred to see a specialist. I am going for my operation in the next few weeks. To have put up with this for almost 20 years, my surgeon has said that there is a great risk of developing another stone even after this one is removed. He is going to remove everything. I have always suffered from a dry mouth. I have been tested time and time again for diabetes. Doctor's, if you are reading this, surely this is a simple thing to diagnose. Stop fobbing people off with tablets as they dont work. The only way for sufferers like myself, is to have the operation ASAP. I hope that anyone reading this, that has this ailment, should get to their doctor and demand to be referred. I am so looking forward to being able to eat 'normally' again.
Many thanks for reading. Good luck and Good Health to all of you.
