I am 37 yaers of age. I usually weigh around 10 and half stone at 5ft 6in, I have relapses with my Ulcerative Colitis and I am pescribed Prednisolone. My weight goes up by about a stone each time I take it. This really depresses me because I go to the gym regularly and I dont change my eating habits. The thing that amazes me the most is the criticism I get from other people about my weight changes. Most people presume its because i have been overindulging, and I get fed up of having to explain to people who generally think I am making excuses. It doesnt matter if I do extra cardiovascular work in the gym either the weight wont shift. However when I stop taking the medication my weight gradually reduces back down again. My advice to anyone out there reading this is despite any temporary weight gain that may be making you depressed dont try and come off your medication too quickly or the nasty symptoms of your particular illness will return again.

Was interesting to read your comments on u.c and taking prednisolone. I too have u.c and am taking pred for the first time and worried about gaining weight. i thought maybe if i did extra exercise walking ect.and watched my eating i'd be ok, maybe i was wishful thinking. Glad to hear you eventually lost the weight once you came off your course of pred,at least i know you can now.I know i'l be explaining why i've put on weight.will they believe me or think i've been raiding the cake tin. Anyway hope your coping with u.c and the pred as done its job intended.smile

I would advise everyone to try and take alternative medicine to prednisolone, obvioulsy you must listen to your doctor, but i found it quite demoralising putting a stone on in weight. Yes you are right, it doesnt matter what you do eating or exercise wise it doesnt make much difference. How long did it take for your weight to reduce after stopping steroids? Ive been on them for seven years.
