I am 57 and have just stopped taking HRT after 7 years and am plagued with hot flushes and pins and needles in the fingers. I can find plenty of guidance on the menopause and why to/ not to use HRT, but nothing offering information on what happens when you stop HRT! Help!

You don't have an uterus so you are less at risk and what might make a difference for you is if you have breast cancer in your family. My mom had her uterus out and left her ovaries in but she had a terrible menopause and so have I. She was on it for quite a while and did not develop cancer but it can happen. I can't really tolerate so I am thinking of taking the risk but my doctor told me I would have to have my uterus checked every 4 months. I just had it done and it was fine but up until now I have been taking both. You could try adding some Progesterone with your estrogen and see if it works. For me it made me angry and sleepy. Progesterone can lower your risk of cancer. You are on a pretty low dose. The one you are taking is an synthetic estrogen and for some that has a higher risk for cancer than the estradiol supplements like Estrace oral or the estradiol patches or bio-identical creams which can be made in compounded labs. There is, also, some foods and herbs that are estrogenic and for some people their receptors pick them up and produce natural estrogen. I do eat such foods like flax seed and chinese yams but I still need just a bit more. I am glad you kept your ovaries or you could have been much worse. I suggest you go and get some massages done. It does help me when I do that.

    I meant I can't tolerate progesterone well.

I am so happy to have found this discussion as I was beginning to think I had some mysterious illness. I too have been on HRT for many years and recently gave it up because of worries about cancer. I'm 63 and gave up one year ago. Since that time I've suffered from hot flushes, pins and needles in my fingers, (a symptom I thought I was alone with), tiredness and weight gain. I too was given no information about what happens when you stop taking HRT nor was I really given a good reason as to why I shouldn't keep taking it, (I've had a hysterectomy years ago so was only on estrogen). I'm now thinking I will go back on it, if I can find a doctor to prescribe it.

Hi Carol, I too am happy that I found this site. I have learned a lot here and passed some of this information to my gynecologist. And I also bought the book recommended here, Which is basically out of print except for the copies that are still around, because a lot of that information made sense to me.

Anyway I came off HRT way too abruptly  and it was the worst eight months of my life. I decided to go back on it and I am so much happier. I made an adjustment just to try by not taking  a pill every day, I take it every other day.  (since I had a D&C  I wouldn’t get a period  anymore so changing the schedule I didn’t think would make a big difference. ) So far I have not had this problem I was having cramping every month.  I think for the most part my body has adjusted to the schedule. And I’m not sure I ever want to come off it although if I do I will certainly find a way to taper it down slowly.

In a funny kind of way this therapy is like an addiction, because coming off it is miserable.  The philosophy in this  book I mentioned is that  menopause path is not just an aging hormone situation, it is a Hormone deficiency problem that only humans have ( but not animals who are not spayed.)   I kind of like that answer! There are people who I’ve been reading about not just in the book but in other places that are older and still on hormone therapy.

My birthday was a couple months ago and I turned 70.

I am 67 had a complete hysterectomy at 30 to help with severe mood swings, plus bladder control issues & chronic wide spread pain. I also have an autoimmune immune diesease called Scleroderma/Systemic Sclerosis. I recently have been hospitalized for severe elecrylites instability along with my entire gastric system no longer working. A doctor i Iwas referred to out patient, of whom i was given erroneous information about what he does, stopped my Estradiol I had been on since 30 years of age. I have developed much worse mood swings, shakiness, anxiety, neurological problems increase, unable to focus or concentrate. Main point, I have become much much worse physically and mentally. He has refused to restart it after more than a month. Original plan I would go back on a med if became worse. This Doctor refuses to restart it. I also have Osteoarthritis. He still will not help me. I have suffered horrible every day with no where to turn. My sister's believe Im the one with zero credibility, as he was quick to saying, "just trust me. ". I have no advocate to help get this reversed. This Monday I am leaving his care , with drawing all permission to speak to them. This medication was prescribed by another Doctor and pre-authorized for a year. He will not contact her. I am suffering badly, so yes if you are taken off this med after years of use you have rebound affects worse than prior to them starting said drug. I have been very weak, sick, with every symptom spoken of. i don't recommend coming off this drug after several years of use. I have been screened for cancer, I told him the benefits of being on said drug, far out weigh what is happening. plus the age of when were to stop is dictated by our government CDC of whom keeps changing when. I am not concerned about cancer, I am concerned about staying alive. The problems I am facing are severe, & it also has the tendency to create lack of hope for any life of any kind.
