I am 57 and have just stopped taking HRT after 7 years and am plagued with hot flushes and pins and needles in the fingers. I can find plenty of guidance on the menopause and why to/ not to use HRT, but nothing offering information on what happens when you stop HRT! Help!

    HI,

In response to your query, my mother started taking HRT at 48yrs and recently stopped aged 89yrs! she had pins and needles in her feet while on HRT from the age of 70 which she was told by her orthopeadic consultant it was coming from her back, she saw her nurologist this year and told him she had stopped taking the HRT to see if it helped, no change with pins and needles, suffered no flushes after stopping taking it, the only thing she found was that her memory was not quite as sharp, the nurologist said this is normal after stopping HRT and it would return to how her memory usually functioned but could take 6 to 12months.  I have been taking HRT myself since the age of 47 and I am now 54yrs and still on it, i still get hot flushes, but the reason i stay on it is to help my bone density as i have osteopenia and low blood pressure, so I do not suffer high blood pressure but i was given dixirit by my Gp which has helped enormously with the hot flushes i had, i no longer suffer hot flushes. I still have bloating but find not eaten gluten, wheat and diary helps.

      Hi Ellen,

I am curious, as I am 60 and still taking Activella, did you wean off? If so how...for future reference.  Thanks.  I put weight on with HRT, so not sure what my reason is, other than improper diet and exercise!

Hi Loretta, I haven't been on here for awhile.I started taking one every other day and without realizing I would just forget to take it, when I noticed after about a week and a half I hadn't taken it id day, had a little night sweat a week or so then only problem was weight gain and in all the places I never gained before.

I just went cold turkey on HRT after a pelvic scan saw an increase in the cervix endomitrium. I have been off it 4 days and I sleep all the time and I feel nauseous and hot.

I am due a hysteroscopy in the next 2 weeks to see what's going on.

Thing is that ur body gets used to these synthetic chemicals and become dependent. It is like weaning a child off the breast.

But I have faith all will be ok.

But I came off sequential HRT  which was about 13 weeks ago I just checked I haven't been hardly able to get a good nights sleep at all. I'm a night person anyway and I don't usually get for five sleep hours  but when I would sleep I slept well and feel OK. Since it came off and I feel always hot flashes and sweating and hot or cold it's been miserable. I don't even get tired! Go to bed around four or five in the morning! In a long post earlier above I was contemplating the idea of going back on because my singing ability I think is affected and not what I'd like it to be and part of the reason I went in HRT in the first place. I  got a note back today from my gynecologist who said give it a try because I told him I would do every other day and see how that went. It's a big experiment because as I mentioned I was getting terrible pains at the end of the month but this way I'll extend it for a longer period of time and if I get the painback then I guess I'm off it for good. But I have not been feeling well  energetic since I came off HRT. I didn't realize it was gonna be such an ordeal when I first went on at 25 years ago or so. I just don't know if what I am taking will be amenable to skipping days. My doc said go a head and try it, so you see no one really has the answers!!

    Hi all

I've been following this thread for sometime now and still haven't came across my situation. I had a full hysterectomy when I was 29 and was placed on the full strength estrogen only patch and have been on it ever since. Last year when I turned 49 my "female" GP said that I had to be off HRT by 50 and that we all have to go through it she was weaning me off them when I got to half strength I felt terrible with aches and pains and I practically glowed in the dark with hot flushes. I was put back up to three quarter strength but haven't got any better. Anyway I just turned 50 and I'm dreading a call from GP saying it's time to come off HRT. When I read of stories that some of you guys are still on HRT up to 60 I'm wondering if I should seek advice or change my GP. Hope someone can give me some advice.

I came off HRT on Monday this week. Became peri menopausal at 37, due to the stress caused by the loss of my son at birth. Olathe first couple of days have been dreadful but today I feel much better. It may be the fact that I take citalopram that deals with anxiety. The sweats happen at night and flushes/flashes so far so good.

I think my symptoms are due to anxiety as I had a scan that showed thickening of the cervix's endometrium and I have to have a hysterectopy to determine why. I did not wean myself off just went cold turkey. Let's see how it goes. We women suffer all the burdens in the world.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Hope all will be well with your op.

Thank you. It is more anxiety. I have faith all will be well. I have always been very healthy. Never had an abnormal smear test. It is just one more thing is women need to endure. Sometimes I think men have it too easy.

But rest assured that positivity is the main asset to pulling through it all.

I am grateful to have found this group because I now know I am not alone.

      Hi Brenda,

I am 60 and just got home from my gyn annual appointment, I am in the USA, I have been on HRT since 50 and my gyn said no reason for me to come off, as long as it makes me feel well, stay on it.  If I wean down and find myself not feeling well go back up, that is if I wanted to try to wean off, entirely up to me.  Find another doctor. All the Best to you.

What what strength do you take.  I was taking 0.50 Estrodiol patch. I went off 4 months ago.  I have 30+ hot flashes a day. I went off because I thought I should.  I'm 65. Has full hysterectomy including overies at 50.  I'm not sure what to do

I had a total hysterectomy aged 40, and no HRT. Now, at 59, I have had a heart attack-and have terrible weak bones.Ii look so much older then my friends who had asympathetic doctors who gave them HRT. Am I too old to start and get some beneifts from HRT now? Any advice and comments greatly received. Reading this page HRT has been wonderful to all of you.

Hi, I'm 53 I had total hysterectomy when I was 35 and was put on HRT straight away.

Having been on HRT for 16 years I didn't expect to have to go through menopause as I have no ovaries.

However I came off the oestrogen HRT 18 months ago and I was and still am awful. Hot sweats all the time - I can have a shower go to dry my hair and by the time I've finished my head is soaking wet - mainly scalp, forehead under my eyes and the sweat drips down my face. If I do anything even try to iron or Hoover the same happens. The doctor thought it was excessive sweating and put me on Clonidine 100mg X 3 daily - they have helped a little but I'm to embarrassed to leave the house and with any exertion it still happens. I'm home 24/7 I also suffer with odema in my legs from knee down and my feet/ankles swell badly - I did see a GP over this and they gave me water tablets but they didn't help. I'm at a loss as what to do - everything I do causes sweating and it's unbearable sitting in a chair with a flannel at my side ready to soak up sweat. Any advice/ideas or help would be greatly appreciated
