I am 65yrs.old & a week ago had a grommet inserted into my Rt.ear due to a collection of fluid behind the ear-drum. Since the beginning of December last year my hearing deteriorated & I can only describe it as having a feeling of my ear being full of water, all the symptons that have been documented. My Husband & I have planned a trip to Australia in February this year, because of this the wait & see method was not possible & I had no choice but to opt for surgical treatment.

On the Specialist's advice I had this done under a local anaesthetic, it did not take very long but the experience was something that I would not want to repeat.

To date, although my hearing has improved, I am having to take paracetamol for pain, my ear feels blocked all the time & I have a constant popping noise inside my ear which makes me feel queasy. I did not expect these side effects & wondered if anyone else has experienced similar symptons after having had a myringotomy & grommet inserted. I would love to know, my GP says that this is the norm & will take weeks or months for my ear to return to normal.

[[/b]I have great sympathy with your experience. I am 58 years old and had grommets inserted 2 years ago. One is still in. I had different symptoms in each ear. Whilst the left ear was definiely full of fluid and is no longer, the right ear was very different and having a grommet inserted has made no difference whatsoever. My consultant will not acknowledge this and keeps telling me that all I am experiencing is 'perfectly normal' for someone with slight hearing loss, despite his having promised 'immediate relief' before the procedure. Like you, I feel that this ear is permenently blocked and the sound is muffled, accompanied by clicks and pops. I am convinced that the trouble lies the other side of the eardrum and is not caused by fluid. I am now waiting for an appointment with a new consultant as I do not feel the initial one is listening to me. I cannot believe, like you, that what I am expereincing is 'the norm' - certainly not for 2 years! I will let you know any further explanations following my appointment with the new consultant. Keep smiling! What keeps me going is the thought that , whilst incredibly irritating, these symptoms are not life-threatening, even though they are affecting my qualityof life. My best friend has Motor Neurone Disease and I cannot compare my life quality with hers.

    Hi guest

after reading your Gromit story I'm so sorry your grommets were put in your ears in the chair I couldn't not possibly amagen how much pain you could have had luckily for me my ent specialist placed me in hospital and did them under a Genral anasthtic. It took me about 2 or 3 months to get used of all the new sounds I was hearing but then come been off balance a lot to so they then put me on a medication called serc which help it was fantastic. I had my grommets placed in my ears a on the 10/1/2014 and had them removed on the 10/11/2014 and had my packing removed today which again has given me the really off balance feeling again but the thing I hated the most was not been able to go swimming without blocking my ears with something to keep them dry dry.. Now that I've had all the packing removed today I'm on 2weeks of antibiotics oral and 2weeks of ear drops a repeated hearing test on 10/12/14 and hopefully my ears will be ok to go back to normal every day living because I'm sick of always making sure I had blue tact on hand for the showers or going swimming.  So all the very best of luck with having your grommets and please ask away if u would like to know anything is else as long as I haven't totally confused you. Best of luck

As you can see I have not been on for a year!! I had had my grommet inserted in Sept 2012. I went to Australia the following jan. Actually in Dec. My ear was hurting a lot so I saw the specialist to see if anything could be done before flying. He told me that the grommet had come out and got lost in the tube somewher!! So he made a little "nick" and took it out. He said to go on my holiday and come back and see him. So I did. My ear was very painfull all through and after we came back I got an infection. After 2 courses of antibiotics it was still bad. Then one monday morn in May it was so painful, n felt dizzy I had to be driven to the docs. He gave me stronger antibiotics and I came home. Took 1 went to bed and knew nothing till I woke up in hospital on Tues evening!! Had drips everywhere and was in darkness. I had caught Meningitis!!! I took about 3 1/2 weeks in hospital. Glad they caught it in time. I am now recovering slowly. I still get that fullnes in my ear and sometimes pain, but I am not going back to the ENT. I would rather suffer it!!!
