i am 62 and have recently found out that i have Barrrets.

I already have a hiatus hernia.

you have probably already been told to avoid any acidic drinks.

I can recommend root ginger and honey.

I have just had a 24 hour Ph test and i discovered that when i had an acid reflux a cup of the above eased

the pain and brought the Ph level back to where it should be.

    Hi Melanie

Sorry to hear about your recent discovery

I to have a hiatal hernia with Barrett's have know about this for about 3 years or so and are about your same age give or take as for drinking I love to drink Iced Tea just regular brewed tea with sugar I keep a picture around at all time this and water are my main stays I know they say no pop but I find that ginger ale like a diet version is quit good for me

So what led you to get a upper endo? Routine, reflux, chest pain? How are you food ? Any regurgitation issue there are several other folks on here that have the exact thing we have and have some great advice check out some other thread by looking up hiatal hernia Barrett's etc

Good luck your not alone not by far

    Hi Melanie,

My sympathies on your diagnosis I'm same as you so know the score. Now as for drinks I drink pretty normally really,no coffee, water, tea, the odd glass of fizzy orange and coke and an occasional pint or two,and yes sometimes I suffer but hell you only live once.

Two months ago I was religiously on weak tea and water when I was really bad,but just before Christmas for some reason I improved, not completely, but enough to start eating pretty normally and having the odd 'risky' titbit.

Stopped the Lansaraprozole, not good long-term and take Ranitidine when required is the way I go now and try not to let this thing rule me.

But really if I relapse I will revert to water and weak tea and my honey and Slippery Elm concoction, and DCL and Digestive enzyme, not as good as a pint but less troublesome to the gut.

In the meantime ,I know it ain't gonna go away so I'm gonna enjoy life for a while.

I wish you well, and hey there's thousands of us out here, and the numbers are increasing daily, happy days!

    Regards Malc

Hi Melanie, since I was being diagnosed with Barrett ( 2 weeks), I have been drinking camomile tea sometimes with a half teaspoon of honey, ginger tea, ginger and green tea, licorice tea, green tea, almond milk and water. I try to finish a litre of +essentia water(ph 9.5) or Fiji water (ph 7.7). I also made chicken broth with ginger and cinnamon stick.... Yummy! Today, I drank half a glass of red wine, and I felt fine but I won't dare drink it regularly. Also, i am staying away from all fizzy drinks and milk as much as possible. I also gurgle with salt water before going to bed... Salt water is alkaline.... It soothes my throat. And I take DHL once a day 20 mins before breakfast or lunch. I am also taking phosphorous 30c till my homeopath comes back from India. I have included probiotic yoghurt in my diet and having it at least once every other day. I also take a probiotic pill everyday.I just hope everything I do now will stop Barrett from spreading. I really couldn't tell as I don't really have any symptoms of acid reflux before my endoscopy. As my doc said, mine is silent. Oh yes, one more thing which I am doing now is to eat less per seating as in portion control. Like I said, hope that helps.

Hello Melanie, I am like you. I had no prior obvious symptoms of Barrett except when I was doing sit ups with weights , I have a stabbing pain in the sternum area...I thought I pulled something. But I have sort of neck pain below both my tonsils but have always thought it was my pillow. Have gone in to see my GP before but she thought it was my goiter but everything was ruled out and now this! What a bummer. Oh yes, my asthma like symptoms must have been the sign of Barrett. I think my Barrett could have arose from over eating...I love eating. I always thought as long as I work out, I can eat as much as I want. I am not fat at all and I am very active. So, now I have to cut down on food per seating and not eat 3 hours before sleeping. I don't smoke but is an ocassional drinker. Maybe it is my childhood too. I was brought up in a home without parents and there were days I don't have any food to eat and I will scrummage any spoil foods and eat it. I know, right....?.....I can't get my head around this whole thing too. Haven't slept well for a number of days when I first learnt about it. Let's keep our fingers cross that it won't get any worse. I will keep you inform once my homeopath comes back and I like to hear what she has to say.

Hello Melanie, my homeopath felt like I am too stressful with my life. She said it is not a problem having hiatal hernia but I really should deal with my personal problem and try to heal from inside my body. Right now I have 3 pellets of Staphsagria 1m for 3 weeks and then my next appointment with her. Meanwhile, she recommended me to a chiropractor who can help to physical massage/push my stomach down. ( I have trying this myself...you can find some videos online on how to help massage your stomach back to position) Apparently, if one get upset or angry or frustrated too often, the LES relaxes and that create the reflux. When I do the sit ups, the motion pushes my stomach upwards and create the pain I have on my sternum. She has told me that I can eat anything I want except coffee and soft drinks. But, I have chosen to lessen the amount of chillies and curries I have. So far, I only had 2 glasses of alcohol at 2 different occasion: half a glass of wine and a vodka martinee and I felt fine on those 2 occasions. How about you? What are you doing to help with your situation?
