I am a 90 year old diabetic

I am an insulin dependent diabetic.  My daughter gives me 2500 mg. of Metformin twice a day.  I have been on this medication for 5 years.  I can't sleep, my legs and feet are enormous and I have difficulty breathing.  I want to die.  What do I do?

Sorry to hear about your condition.  I guess you have a doctor to consult who should be able to improve your breathing and swollen legs.  The dose of Metformin seems rather high but you are probably used to it after 5 years.  I don't think your symptoms are side-effects and if you felt better you may start to get some joy back into your life.  These days you have to keep on asking for help, so get your daughter to keep pestering the doctor to see you.  Good luck!

Thanks for the input Colin.  Actually, this is her other daughter. LOL.  Mom did have the side effect of somnolence (spelling?) as listed on Mayo Clinic's website too.  She got quite sad as she lost her ability to walk because of her swollen legs.  She said she wanted to die.  She did die a little over a year ago.  I was concerned because my sister, who was her caregiver had no knowledge of medication dosages and was tired of taking care of her.  I found a big bad of Metformin at their house and became concerned. My brother lives there and he also has edematous legs and feet respiratory difficulty and I am concerned about him. My sister prepares his meals also.  She wants him to move out of the house even though he has not been well...hey, I get concerned.  Any thoughts?
