Sorry to hear about your loses, I lost my father to colon cancer. I personally think his was found to late, because having surgery when you have cancer at a certain stage, just causes it to spread quicker.
When I lost my father, and we buried him on the Monday, I was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer, which does have a much higher survival rate. I am still in remission but just before last Xmas, I many checks because I showed all the symptoms of Prostate Cancer, luckly it was a false alarm which was caused by a false/negative symptom showing up. I do have polyps, but they are showing up as okay now, and not cancerous for the time being. I am still in remission for Testicular Cancer which finshes next month.
A Colonoscopy is a simple procedure, whoever said you need painkillers is going a bit over the top. A sedative you can have, but to be honest I have had that many Colonoscopies I don't bother with sedatives anymore, the only time you feel a little discomfort is when they emit some air to the the camera around a corner, if I remember rightly I think they do this about 3-4 times, they inform you as they progress. With me they went as far as my appendix, obviouusly not everyone still have these anyway.
If they remove a polyp, you will not even know - I didn't until they told me. They also state you may have slight signs of blood in your faeces for about a week, polyps are small the healing process is very quck.
