i am addicted to zopiclone

i have been on zopiclone for three years now and every proffessional i meet keeps telling me that its not addictive and that it is just all in my head in which i replied that if they were to take me off it without being weaned then it would have a detrimental effect on my already serious mental health problems. why do they think that just because they are in a certain proffession that they automatically know everything, they know nothing, i know my own body and ive experienced the traumitising side effects of not having zopiclone in my system, give them zopiclone for a while and then see if they still think its not addictive !!!

Hi, I have been on zopiclone for nearly two years, prescribed for post-natal depression and I have recently moved area. When I registered with my new doctor he was horrified that I had been on it for so long. He said it should only be prescribed for short-term insomnia. My doctor is slowly lowering my dose and now I am down to 3.75mg a night which is great. IT IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE in my opinion, whether it is physical or mental I don't know. I have tried to get to sleep without a tablet and just lie there thinking 'I'm not going to sleep...'. I am continuing my withdrawal and hope I will be off this drug soon as I feel during the day I am never fully awake and am sure I shouldn't be in charge of a vehicle, or even my toddler. My memory is appalling, my concentration non-existent and I'm clumsy too. My poor husband has to work all day and then get up in the night if the little one needs a cuddle as I am comatose after I take my tablet. I wish I'd never taken zopiclone and wish my doctor hadn't been so quick to prescribe.

 Zopiclone is highly addictive, like any sleeping tablet! I was prescribed them first a few years ago, and was hooked on them for over a year. It took me doing it on my own to stop, I cut them into bits until eventually I was only taking a crumb. The problem is that they are not only physically addictive, you are addicted mentally to taking something to get you to sleep, so even a crumb helps. I do wish docs wouldn't hand them out so easily, as it is so hard to stop taking them.

I have a nice understanding doc now - he will only prescribe 3 packs of the 3.5 dose 3 times a year, as I can't sleep when I go on holiday, and sometimes I get stressed and have spells of insomnia. I am very careful with them, now, though, and with a lot of willpower, only take them for 4 nights in a row, no more, or I know I'll have a problem again.

If you are trying to kick these, good luck. Try Lloyds Chemist High Strength Sleep Easy tabs combined with Valerian Tea, it does help psychologically, at least. smile

    Hi,

I've been on zopiclone for about 6 months and have become addicted. For some reason I checked the Wikepedia entry for these tablets the other day and was horrified to see that they cause cancer!!! Not \"can\" cause cancer........they do!!! The first thing I did was throw the tablets away - I've not slept properly for the last 3 nights, I've got a constant metallic taste in my mouth, I've got hot flushes and palpitations, I'm anxious, fuzzy headed and feel generally terrible but I WILL NOT take them ever again. I have a history of cancer in my family - my doctor should have warned me about the link between these tablets & cancer. I also suffer from a heart condition too so the additional palpitations aren't welcome either.

If you can get off zopiclone - do it............and do it now! It's not easy I know but it's the best thing to do.

Good luck to anyone out there having the same problem!

    Hi there

This drug is meant for short term use only. What I find more shocking is the fact your GP has been prescribing it for so long.

You should never have been allowed to become dependent on it.

Good luck with getting your sleep pattern back to normal without the need of drugs.
