I am allergic to anticoagulants

Hi everyone
Sorry I have not been about much the last few days.
I went to hospital last Monday ( Bank Holiday ) My legs had swollen like tree trunks and had a little bruising and pain in my calf muscles at the back of my lower legs both sides but worse on operated side. I could no longer cope with the pain so went to A & E. The treated me with anticoagulants and sent me home. Over night the swelling went down but as soon as I got out of bed and started walking about as the day went on my legs got swollen and tight again with more bruising. My legs were so sore and tight I thought the skin was going to split. I haven't been able to walk very far only round the lounge for the last few days because of severe joint pain in knees both sides and right hip ( unoperated side ).
I have also been getting pains in other joints and most of my muscles. Turns out I was allergic to the anticoagulant A & E used on me from what my GP has told me. I have not knocked myself or done anything to injure myself but my body is covered in black bruising as if I had been used as a punching bag.
I have had very little sleerp too because my legs were so sore and nothing I could do to get comfortable.
I feel much better today but I am just going to take it easy till I can talk to my consultant next week. I have never in my life had pain like it and I thought it better to stay off the forum most of the time because I was so miserable mand felt I was going backwards not getting better as I was promised.
My right knee still has black brusing all around it and the back of the knee is still very swollen but I can now move without much pain although it is still there but bearable. I now know why even though I was dead against having the injectionsI know hoave a even better reason not to have them than just being scared of needles. Fingers crossed when I have my right hip done in about 14 weeks time they might just listen to me more now too.

I am sorry to hear that you are going through so much and sincerely hope it all gets sorted out soon, have they identified what constituent/s of the anti-coagulant is responsible for your allergy?
My LTHR was carried out as an emergency following an accident so when I was admitted I told the doctors that due to my "porcine" allergy certain anti-coags could not be used (porcine products cause anaphylaxis in me). All of the staff were not aware that porcine was a constituent and it caused a delay whilst they obtained the one drug that was safe for me (they also checked the prosthesis and cement constituents).
Yesterday I received a prescription for Alendronic Acid and Adcal-D3 through the post, one of the constituents in Alendronic Acid is made from either bovine or porcine products but which has been used is not stated on the batches. As AA has a very long half life (10.9yrs) (time it takes to be excreted from the body) a 70mg dose could be potentially life threatening and my epipen would not be effective.
So what I am trying to say is that not all doctors know the pharmacology of all drugs and your allergy needs fully identified so that you can both make madical staff aware and check for yourself the safety of what you are taking.
Very best wishes, Dot.

Yes I know I have got to get to the bottom of this. I have another hip to be done in about 12 weeks ( My right one ) I wasn't supposed to have been given the medication any way because it can cause asthma flare ups too but they wouldn't listen. So been having a few episodes with my normally well controlled asthma too. One of the many reasons my consultant put me on Aspirin. You seem to have a big issue with your allergy. There isn't much I am allergic too but the few things I am are mainly medical I can't use hospital plasters I am allergic to the glue they use and have to provide my own for anything I have done that requires them. Thank you for your very helpful post Dot x
