I am an alcoholic

Hi there, I am 23 years old and been drinking every night for 3 years. Started at 3-6 beers a night. Now 10-12 beers a night. I have a very high tolerance. I am 5'2 weighing 127 pounds, so smashing a 12 pack really shouldn't be as easy as it is for me. I want to try an stop drinking every night. I've done it before but found my way back. I would like people's opinions on tapering, out patient programs and partial programs. I am a full time student and I work on the weekends. So I have been thinking about tapering. Go from 10 to 8 to 6 etc. then zero. Anyone done this before? Am I safe? When I went to my doctor she was scared but I feel as if the doctors can not give me the OK to taper because they just want to fill my body with benzos to ween off alcohol. But then I'll just have to get off benzos. (I am not a pill taker, I have a very hard time taking them)

Wow.you scare me....i'm  5'2, 127 lbs and these fake fingernails really slowing me down...so exccuse all errors...

You scare me because I was you at 23 and I am you at 53.  I stopped for 8 years...but had I not ever stopped I really see your life span ending around 43...;(... because if I did'nt stop at 41...I wouldn't have made it to 43.

If you can get sober and stay sober for any length of time....I hope God blesses you to stay that I way...I relapsed 3 years ago...have been in the hospital numerous times over the past 3 years...and the last one being 3 months ago...

I also think that I went in the hospital to detox for the first time AT around 23 sad....So eery to me....

I always knew I drank to much and like you at your age...I started to know I had a problem.

Its a tough, serious problem at that....i tried to push it aside many times between 23 and 41 and i  couldn't go 4 days without a beer...tilll i got so sick I almost died when i was 41...

They called it...I got sick of being sick...and i remember it well.

You give good advice as usual and have a lot of experience concerning drinking and the pitfalls

Hi d910, I'm 48 and have been a binge drinking alcoholic for 30 years, a typical binge on a weekly basis would be 12 cans of full strength 4 nights a week then 3 days abstein, absolute nightmare! Over the last 6 months I have been trailing both baclofen and naltrexone with success but not at the same time, firstly baclofen does stop cravings and when you do pick up a drink it tastes undesirable, trouble with this drug is you have to keep upping the dose till you find your point of no cravings, which can mean many pills another side effect is sleeping.

By far the most successful drug I have taken and I've taken every medication available for alcoholism is Naltrexone (a drug specifically designed for addiction). It works on the brain in the sense that you are satisfied after 4 cans and lose the desire to drink, much like someone without a problem, an additional benefit for me is I don't have cravings either, well maybe after a week ,so I'll have 4 cans and walk away, however you must have the desire to stop obviously .the beauty of naltrexone is one 50 mg pill in the morning. It's cut my drinking down by 2 thirds

Hi I do not know how to reply to everyone all at once but just an update I put myself in detox, 5 days. Best decision I've ever made in my life. I feel like a new person. I am on 25 mg of Zoloft a day which is helping greatly. I was numbing my depression with alcohol. Now instead, I take my pill before bed, get up at 7 AM and enjoy the whole day. I used to sleep till 1-2 PM. It feels nice to have my life back. Hoping to keep up the good work and I am very greatful for all the advice and feedback I got on this post. Detox was scary and tough but it is worth it in the end. 💕

Hi! Sorry I have no been on this site for awhile. I am doing very well. Still haven't touched any booze since I went to detox. The occasional N/A beer if I am out to dinner or at a party (helps me cope and not feel out of place). I am happier than ever. 💕💕 I am still on Zoloft at 25 mg and see a therapist every two weeks. So far so good.
