I AM BRAND NEW

I accidentally came across this and found it interesting and thought interacting with others may help me with some of my issues.  I am 56 and live in the country and am type 2 diabetic  but found out 3 years ago I have polymyalgia rheumatic & giant cell arteritis. it took doctors/specialist 4 months to find out what was wrong with me and now I am on prednisone, which I consider a miracle drug.  my doc keeps trying to get me to see yet another rheumatologist after I have seen 3 already because she wants me off the steroids.  hasn't happened yet but I fear she will stop the prednisone and I will hurt like I did so I am working on getting in to see one. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr   anyway, I appreciate any and all advice and I hoe its ok to give mine.

Welcome aboard connie95235, I am in the mountains of New Mexico. One Rheumy for miles, she and I do not see eye to eye. I will not reduce my dosage if I have any PMR pain. Have had 1 bad flare and several minor flares. We try to help each other and learn. I believe with the help of the forum I have helped my Rheumy. Good luck on your journey, try to stay positive and keep a smile. Smiling. 🙂

    Hi,

It not important how many doctors you see. The one is enough but should be seriously treated your case. It is very difficult to describe the "successful" treatment on  the Web. The doctor decision is obligatory and successful performance will give you proof of the proper treatment. If for some time will be more questions than success, then change the doctor.

    Good Luck

Hi and welcome to the PMR forum...

I am now off prednisolone, but i have type 2 diabetes and i suspect this is why your doc wants you off the steroids because preds raise your glucose levels and blood pressure. This was one of the reasons i wanted to come off preds asap, it took approx one year to taper off them. My glucose levels were very high and thus my medication for that had to be increased also, metformin which in turn blocked my B12 from absorbing. So my fatigue was through the roof!......my best wishes to you connie85235.....

Prednisone is a miracle, isn't it?  Rather than letting the doctor try to wean you too quickly off pred I hope you are being very strict with your diet and also getting enough exercise?  I don't know what the latest recommendations are for diet for type 2 diabetes, but I don't think anyone is harmed by severely restricting carbs, especially refined grains, and added sugar.  I'm not diabetic but my blood sugar soared when I started pred.  A combination of slowly tapering to a lower dose and basically giving up most carbs brought the levels down within a few months.  Although it wasn't completely "normal" again for over a year it was well below the danger level quite quickly.

The American Diabetic Association (I think, could be another group) actually now recommends low carb for management of Type 2 diabetes  - although for some reason they seem to think it can't be kept up long term. Depeds on the person I suppose - I certainly never find low carb a problem and feel rather better without carbs than with.

connie85235, I have been a type 2 diabetic for 55 years the Pred has caused my Blood Sugar readings to sky rocket. I am very active, eat a very strict diet, but nothing seems to help. I think I will be able to get in control once again on lower doses. I am an Optimus looking forward, hope the rest of your journey does not have too many bumps, think positive and try to smile. Smiling 🙂
