I am concerned that people over 50 should not take more than 50micrograms a day according to leaflet

Why should people over 50 not be taking more than 50 micrograms of levothyroxine a day? I recently read the leaflet enclosed in the box containing levothroxine, advising this! i have been on 175 micrograms for over a year, i am 62 and have not been told by any GP i should not be on this high dose. can anyone shed any light on this. i will be discussing this with my GP in a couple of weeks however, i would like some feedback before then, if possible.

Thanks for letting me know. My sister and myself are on 100mc, I take them last thing at night as they were making me a bit disorientated. However that seems a lot better now and recent blood test show I am at the right level and doseage. I will check this out as only been on them 6 months.

I rang the generic company who manufacture the thyroxine i take. they were very good, they could not answer my question right away, they advised they would look into my query and ring me back. I was contacted today, they explained medical trials showed people over 50 with heart conditions did not react well to high doses of thyroxine. it was recomended that initially they should be started on low doses and increased under medical supervision over 4 weeks. However anyone on thyroxine over 50yrs should not have problems with high doses. as the body has got used to this. i am pleased this has been clarified!
