i am currently 31 weeks pregnant and had OC diagnosed at around 26 weeks, around 6 years ago i had an alergic reaction to the combined pill (dianette), although it took the doctors 2 months to work out why i was itching all over very severly, even the private liver specialist had never linked itching to liver problems before!!! as soon as the worked out it was the pill i stopped it and the itching was soon gone, but the doctors warned that it was something that may come back with pregnancy.

when i got pregnant, even though i was prepared and kept getting the doctors to check my LFT's and when the itching started i knew what was happening even though the doctors didnt think it was! 3 weeks later of course all results started to rise, the doctors started me on ursofalk, after 3 weeks having doubled my dose every week i am now on the maximum dose, but it does nothing to ease the itching. i cant sleep for more than 2 hours a night, i wake up scratching my feet so much that some days i limp! because of the lack of sleep i am irritable and moody, my work just think i'm lazy and moaning, my friends just think i'm attention seeking, i cant wear anything too fitted or i end up crying in pain at the need to scratch, i cannot sit for too long as the heat i get around my private's makes the itch unbareable, i cant have my cats sit on me as they make me too hot that i throw them off to scratch! and my poor husband knows i'm in distress but cant do anything to help, but i dont think he understands how bad it is.

i have tried every antihistamine, every cream, had the steroid injection but nothing helps and i worry so much about the effect on my poor little baby, all the doctors can suggest is inducing me earlier than 37 weeks, but i dont want a small premature baby that has to stay in hospital for the first month or so of its life.

my heart goes out to anyone who goes through this and i hope i and my baby can make it just 6 more weeks!

just to offer some words of support.it such a cliche but when the baby is born it will be all worth it .i was diagnosed with oc at 28 wks and so followed the exact symptoms you describe. nobody can imagine how awful it is unless theyve been through it.when they said theyd induce at 38 wks i nearly cried with relief. its now six years later and ive plucked up the courage to have a second .im 27 weeks and just starting to itch on my feet.welcome to hell. my first baby was big and strong and im sure yours will be soon .the doctors at my hosp reckon there is no evidance that this condition causes fetal distress .a complete turn around from my first pregnancy.feel i need a second opinion.good luck to you,you must be nearly therenow.

i have been researching itchiness in pregnancy, suffering as i am at 28 weeks and have been since 24 weeks. I have just read an article on dandelion root it comes in capsules and tea and has reportedly been shown to boost the liver and help with itching apparently. it may be worth a try
