Trimethoprim didn't work for me either. No effect whatsoever. NHS prescribe this because it is cheap. You may need an antibiotic or a different type of antibacterial. Your urine sample should be sent for tests. Only then will they know what type of medication you should be on. Go back to the doctor and insist on this.

I've been through constant agony with UTI's for about 4yrs now - it has been hell (still is). I just wanna let u guys know that if you are in the same situation always take a sample of your first urination of the day when you go 2 the doctor and, let him do his dipstick and ALWAYS ask/persist that he sends it for analysis BEFORE you take any antibiotics.

The reason being is that antibiotics are not good - they lower immunity, so ur more likely to catch something else which will make things worse when u take them. This has happened to me many times, BUT of course you want 2have them 2 take away ur hellish symptoms for a few weeks at least.

If you hold on 48hrs for culture tests - they will prescibe the exact antibiotic to kill the bacteria which is causing the infection, which means it WILL work (until the next one). Whereas, if you are prescribed a general antibiotic which may (or may not) kill it, you are running the risk of it being unsuccessful and lowering ur immunity, which is just silly.

All in all - even though its hard 2 hold on for the tests. Seriously - wait for them. Doctors overprescribe antibiotics thesedays - they are not good at all. I've had chest infections and ulcers everytime I take them, so it makes me suffer cystitis longer...i dont know whats worse really!!

I truley know how all you women feel and I empathise. I requested a blood sample 2b taken, which was normal (phew), but I am now wanting a bladder exam - just in case. I dont see how having them all the time for years is normal.
