I am depressed about glistening effect of Alcon intra ocular lens.

I had uveitis in my right eye and developed cataract because of using steroids. i had cataract surgery 2 years ago. I have very large pupil and this Alcon IOL gives weird look to my eye. it sparkles and shines under most light conditions. many people notice that and ask about that. i hate that feeling. Everytime doctor told me there is no lens that doesnt give that reflection. Recently tecnis synergy lens has been approved in USA and i heard that it doesnt give that glisten or reflection. I asked my doctor today and she said she doesnt have any experience with that lens and she doesnt know about its cosmetic appearance. Is there anyone with synergy lens here? i want to be sure that its true before talking to doctor again.

thank you

Sofport IOL is silicone monofocal and wont have the diamond eye. Tecnis has a monofocal too that wont have it.

It is insult to injury to not be told of this and then told your feelings arent valid about it. Talk to your doctor about these other lenses. Get informed, weigh the risks vs benefits and make your own decision.

thank you so much for understanding. I asked both of my ophthalmologists and they have same answer. Before surgery i didnt know this will happen, my neighbor visited me and told me that your this eye shines more than the other eye. And it was very clear in mirror too. After that i send picture to my doctor and asked her if there is anything i can do about it. she said there is no lens that will not give this reflection and she told me that it it bothers me that much then i can consider wearing tinted glasses to hide it. thats not possible for me, but on every appointment I ask her and she says same that there is no lens so far without this reflection and she has no experience with synergy lens.

You need to see another surgeon and tell them you were not informed of the cosmetic side effect and you want to discuss options. You may have to pay out of pocket to have your lens exchanged.

im ready to pay too if there is any option for me. I have an appointment tomorrow and i will discuss with doctor again. i will try to look for other doctors too.

I agree with your ophthalmologists. If this issue is being caused by a large pupil, then keep in mind that a "large pupil" is only large in dim light or in the dark. The pupil contracts in higher light levels.

Whatever you do, don't even think about the Synergy lens. This is a multifocal and will for sure have optical side effects like halo, flare, and possibly spider webs that YOU will see, not other people. These lenses are only successful in those who are fully aware of the visual side effects, and are prepared to live with them. Often the effects are so bad that people will not drive with them at night. I think if you are not prepared to live with some minor cosmetic issues not affecting your vision, then you are never going to be able to live with a Synergy multifocal lens.

I totally agree. I just came back from appointment and doctor said same thing as you. She said I dont have any issues with my vision with this lens and she cant guarantee how my eye will respond to other lens. so I decided to keep this lens.

      thank you very much

Is there anyone who has different IOL and doesnt have diamond eye?

I don't think I've ever noticed any diamond eye effect in my right eye and I have had a Tecnis toric monofocal IOL in that eye for almost 4 years now. My pupil is around 5-6mm size.

oh really? you dont see multiple reflections or sparkly eye? im trying to attach my eye picture. it looks like this when when my pupil is not that big but inside its even bigger and eye looks even weird.

i have sent a photo of my eye but it is saying that this reply is waiting to be moderated.

you will get idea how it looks like. Noone has ever told you anything about your eye? In my case many friends told me that my right eye is shining more than other eye and it doesnt look normal. that makes me more conscious. But im surprised in your case. Im from Califonia and my both doctors said there is no lens so far that doesnt give that look.

If you do an internet google search on "Diamond Eye (AcrySof Monofocal)" you will find another thread here on this topic from a couple years ago that includes a photo showing the effect in the eye. In that thread again it was some with AcrySof IOLs that had the effect, while some with Tecnis IOLs did not.

Interesting fight on cat eyes exist or not, so I will not join in that part of the discussion.

Instead I will give different advice. As someone that has all kinds of flaws I have been criticized for over the years, my advice as tough as it is, is accept your flaws what ever they are, otherwise you will go insane.

It is like the person with the Big Nose that calls himself the Nose.

Get to the point that if someone calls out your reflection, you just say, "Yea damn old age and cataracts, what can you do, you are so lucky to be young". Now that person feels bad and you have nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about.

I know it is not the same, but I use the Cataract excuse all the time these days. When I play tennis and my partner says how did you miss the ball and I am like Damn Cataracts!!

I think the same, but I am retired. I have noticed that I have gotten "much wiser" since I have retired. I really don't care as much what other people think and no longer have an employer to "impress", as we are now independently wealthy. One of the benefits of being retired. But, I understand also that those that are younger and not retired, still have other considerations...
