I am now at week 7 after my microdiscectomy for a l5/s1 ...

I am now at week 7 after my microdiscectomy for a l5/s1 prolapse. This was my second and by far worst prolapse. On the same disk I had surgery 8 years ago and had no problems until last October.

Without going into the misery (3 months of hell, you all know the score) I want to tell you about the positives. I was pain free on waking up from the op on both occasions, I was really worried this time as the chances of success were less (65-70%). However I have just come in from swimming, I have taken my two dogs from a walk in the rain at 6am and I am going back to work tomorrow!!!!

Everyone is different but from my own experience dont be afraid of the operation, I was / am certainly more afraid of how I was just 7 weeks ago when everyday I thought I couldnt go on.

Good luck to all of you Lorraine:D

It's so great to read all the other comments on this site as it has really made me realise that I'am not the only one!

Im a 34 year old woman with 2 children aged 7 and 4 and I've suffered from lower back pain on and off for 3 years which I had been able to keep in check with regular visits to a Chiropractor.

However since Dec 05 the pain has not responded to treatment and approx 7 weeks ago the pain became unbearable! I've got v bad pain and muscle spasms in my lower back, right hip, buttock, and leg right the way down to my heel. Last week the pain became so severe my husband drove me to AE where they gave me an injection of diclofenac, some solpadol and diazepam for the leg spasms. The painkillers have taken the edge off the pain but I am waking up in the night in agony so am dreading bedtime!

Two days ago I had my first visit with a Consultant Spinal Surgeon who sent me for an immediate MRI scan. He called me later that night to advise me that I had, in his words " a big juicy prolapse of the L5 disc causing compression on my S1 nerve root"

He has recommended I have a microdiscectomy as this is 90% successful so I am booked in to have the op done on sat 3 june 06. Am v apprehensive but feel alot better since finding this site.

I will let you know how I get on! Lucy

    :yikes:

Good luck Lucy you are the same age as me and thats far to young to be crippled as you are. I have been back at work for 3 weeks and had my first night out last night - although after so long not drinking due to the stupid amount of drugs I was on was a bit of a lightweight!! My point being I am doing normal stuff again and its so good. Let us know how you get on Lorraine:lol:
