I am plagued with ectopic heartbeats and have lapsed into AF upon many occasions. I am only early 40s and these irregular beats have ruined my life. I have a rare illness antiphospholipid syndrome, which as a blood clotting disorder is clearly partly responsible.
My biggest problem is that the runs of ectopics always have one thing in common when they manifest themselves - there is always severe gastrointestinal activity just prior to the attack and it precipitates the ectopics so much, I get runs of 5 ectopics for every one beat, which makes me feel faint and sick.
I take Bisoprolol in a very low dose 1.25mg, as I develop bradycardia with higher doses. It helps to keep the heart rate under control but does not really supress the ectopic beats.
I am convinced that the ectopics are brought on by sphincter incompetence and gullet spasm, and severe flatulence(if I "bring up" loads of wind, the ectopics ease greatly or vanish for the day) Nobody even my GP can definitely confirm a correlation between the severe GI disturbances and the ectopics.I would welcome a paper on this subject which I could read or to know if others share this same set of symptoms.I feel if I can prove the link, I will be taken more seriously and maybe even be halfway to finding a solution.
I lost my job three years ago and have never worked since, largely due to MS type symptoms I suffer with my illness but the added ectopics and AF attacks make everything far worse.I would quite literally try anything non invasive to alter my life to something reasonable again !! I have kept a diary and have proved that my ectopics are provoked by GI problems but I can't find anything on the web that confirms this .Reassurance would be so helpful !

Hi All... I'm 45 male and new to this. I had kidney Stone operation in January 2016. As I have had bypass surgery 8 years ago... I was checked with treadmill test and 24 hr holter monitor. That time I has 3 PACs. Started feeling skipped beats few months later... had a 24 hr holter again and was diagnosed in July 2016 with 6 PACS and 12 PVCs in 24 hour. Today is 11th September 2016 and I have felt and recorded 28 ectopic beats in 12 hours. I'm worried that they will continue to increase. Anyone know what to do?

I'm having same problem. Had upset left stomach problems for about 7 years. Now nothing shows on any test/scan. I've started getting eptopic heartbeats which are scariest things ever! I'm waiting for a 24 hour monitor but I was wondering if it could be linked to my stomach issues as I'm a normal weight 34 year old that has never smoked never drank coffee. I do drink alcohol but cut down lots over last 3 years do just unsure why this is happening to me!

I totally agree with you, and sympathise with you. It is most definatly trigged by gas in the stomach. I tried explaining this to my doc and the cardiologist but they had no answer, instead looked at me like i was a wierdo. I also find after burping that the ectopics ease or disapear. But they do definatly occur when i feel a build up of gas.
i get the ectopics many times daily which can last upto 10 min at a time. Worst feeling in th world, the fluttering like a fish flapping around in your chest which occasionally stops me breathing as they are happening.
Been to many doctors and they all say nothing to worry about and everyone gets them. I can garuntee that not everyone gets them like we all do in this forum. It is pretty worrying not knowing when thy will go away or if it will be ok. does anyone get the yawns straight after? after my episodesi go into yawnning mode and yawn for about 5 min, feel like going to sleep how tired it makes me afterwards.
I dont know anymore i just have to trust the doctors that it is nothing to worry about. Ive had them now for 15 years. Gennerrally getting worse andmore frequent in age (42 now). non smoker, dont drink coffee. but do binge on alcohol time to time. doesnt help as the ectopics go wild the next day on a hangover every time i try to move it triggers them.
I too welcome the paper to prove ectopics are trigged by stomach gasses and dicipate after burping.

That's really interesting because when my reflux is very bad and so are the ectopics, I daren't move. Any idea why? I definitely think the vagus nerve is the problem but how do we treat that? I find it so uncomfortable and makes me very anxious 😩

I also have many ectopic beats which seem to be largely exacerbated by stomach and esophageal activity. I have suffered with this intermittent problem for 4 years.
Sometimes both GI symptoms and stress (elevated adrenaline, cortisol etc.) need to be present for a bad episode to occur.
Because stress is ubiquitous, I think it's important to place importance on the GI issues being a direct cause of palpitations. Due to vagus nerve location it is abundantly obvious how this factor contributes to irregular heartbeat.

I agree that a research paper needs to be considered. Glad you posted. This has been frustrating for me to understand the correlation
