okay so im going to make this short. but about three days ago i could not sleep because downstairs was itching so much. i woke up, still had an itch. so i assumed it was a yeast infection. i have never had a yeast infection so i just got the monistat, used it and so on. i decided to look at my vag because i was feeling some burning nd i saw some bumps. i made an appt w yhe docotr and she said it looked like it could be herpes or HPV. i just want some more opinions!!! i have only ever had one sexual partner, so i am feeling really beat up and upset about this whole situation. Thank u!!!image

    Dear Bluebutterflies,

There's a world of difference between warts (HPV) and herpes.

Warts tend to be PAINLESS and LUMPY.

Herpes is associated with multiple superficial ULCERS and are PAINFUL.

At this time, it's impossible to say whether you have any of the two because the itching/soreness you're experiencing could simply be due to thrush. Is the miconazole (Monistat) helping? If it is, then it's unlikely to be herpes.

The best advice is I can give remotely is that you try to attend a sexual health/GU clinic on Monday. Some clinics open on Saturdays as well, it depends where you live. Services are restricted because of lockdown, but a number of clinics have a walk-in service for emergencies and if you explain that you're worried you may have herpes I'm sure you'll be seen.

If you can't get to a clinic and you have herpes:

*If you're in a lot of pain- take some painkillers (paracetamol)

*Try getting lignocaine gel from local pharmacist/Boots and apply this to the ulcers for temporary relief.

*Take warm salt baths (sprinkle 3-4 tbsp of cooking salt in warm bath water) and gently bathe the area and if passing urine is painful, pee in the bath water instead.

    *Drink lots of fluids

    *Bed rest

*(if your GP said you could have herpes, did they give you a prescription aciclovir tabs to take asap?)

    Hope this helps,

    Adhari.

      Hi bluebutterflies,

Warts don't usually cause many symptoms. They just feel lumpy.

Anyway, if your doctor mentioned herpes is a possibility didn't they take a swab to confirm the diagnosis and/or started you on aciclovir or other antiviral medication?

yes i got swabbed and i an waiting on the results and she also started me on aciclover and the itching and pain has gone away for the most part.

i also took monistat aswell so that could have been the reason the itching went away.

in the case that this could only be VP is it possible for the growths to just start or is that something i would have already noticed? i am still a teenager for reference

      Hi bluebutterflies,

OK- good to hear you're taking the meds for herpes, just in case. You'll just have to wait to see what the test results show.

You should be aware that your body is going through a lot of physiological (sexual maturation) changes as you transition from a teenager to an adult.

Many of the things like the VP were probably already there, but because of changes to your sex hormone profile during this time, you'll start to notice changes to your external genitalia; e.g. pubic hair growth, labial maturation and darkening as well as less obvious changes to the vaginal mucosa. VP is just part and parcel of these changes.

      Hope this helps,

      Adhari.
