I banged my foot about a year ago but didn’t get it checked and there is still a red mark there.

Has your primary physician seen your foot? He may want to start out by sending you for Lab blood work. Doctors seem to learn so much about us from our blood work.Your physician may want you to be seen by a foot specialist.Your insurance , if asked, can provide a list of names of foot specialists that are in network with your insurance.
I had, what my primary doctor thought, was Gout. My doctor ordered X-RAYS of my foot, and saw no abnormalities. Meanwhile, both of my big toes got swollen , red, and painful to the touch. A foot specialist , looked at the same X-RAY, and saw small pieces of cartilage broken off. The specialist scheduled me for a Cheilectomy-- a surgical removal of cartilage fragments.
Morale of the story- a specialist is sometimes required for some body part to heal.
