I can not gain any of my weight back since my thyroid removal, what should I do. I am depressed.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyrodism on or about January 2015, I discovered something was wrong when my weight dropped from 173 to about 150 for no apparent reason, I was very comfortable with my weight because I was not a large frame and could easily pass for 150lbs so, I was in a small frame body with this weight of 173. I had my thyroid removed March 19, 2015 and still can not gain any of my weight back, my current weight is 142lbs and people are oftern asking me if I am sick or something, in other words I feel like people think I have AIDS or cancer, so I am now isolating myself while trying to figure how to get my weight back on track.

TIA

If your in the UK you will be given blood tests, regularly to make sure your substitute, hormones are doing the job. I still have my Thyroid but I have Hashimoto Disease and antibodies attack. Resulting in low thyroid hormones, so I take Thyroxine to cover the attacks.

Normally over active thyroid Hyperthyroid, you do not put on weight. I though became Hypothyroid (underactive thyroid) it was difficult for the doctor to realise, as I was not considered over weight at 9 stone 3, Height 5ft 4. I am now 7stone 13lb occasionally I go up to 8 stone 3lb.

My doctor has given me a form for a blood test, just to make sure, my Thyroxine dosage is not too high. It has been known that some people, will buy Thyroxine on the internet, as a slimming aid. If you tKe more than necessary weight will reduce. Certainly not advisable to take as a slimming aid.

Hi Thaliasm, Hyperthyroid disease  is very serious because you lose weight very fast and your heart rate can increase to a dangerous level.  Just like Hypothyroidism both conditions require the use of horomone replacement meds. Now it is hard to get the level so exact like th body would do in normal (NO DISEASE) people. You should have your level of TSH checked. Also your metabolism is high from HyperThyroidism  so you may need to make adjustments to your diet and eat foods that have high carbs so you can not burn your stored weight so quickly.  It may take time to find a happy balance in your thyroid med.  Once your level is normal for you, and not too high, you may put on the weight again.  There are people who help body builders out & they have a powder drink that helps bulk you up, and put weight on you. You could try to go to a store that deals with that.  Also contact a diet counselor, they help people who need to lose or gain weight.  Also for a while you may need to not exercise so you don't burn too many calories. I know so many of us wish we could lose weight easily, and I know how hard it is for you to keep your weight on.  I am an RN and have seen both sides of thyroid disease problems.  However you can live with it.  Be well and I hope this helps.
