I did it, THR!

Had my left hip replaced on the 19th Jan* now I'm back home laid up in bed. I have to say my treatment and care (at Guy's) was top notch.

I read quite a lot on this forum but thought it might be useful to highlight things that surprised me:

1. My first night after the opp my leg made tiny movements of its own, trying to rotate inwards I guess.

2. I've felt things gently moving back into place 'down there'. The surgeon did warn of this but still it's an odd feeling.

3. Every time I did something new eg stand up, I would go into a mini shock trauma and be sick. Others on the ward did as well even people on their second THR.

4. On day 0 I felt fantastic, on day 1 I wanted to die (see 3). A good 12 hours sleep and some anti sick tablets saw me back with a vengeance by day 2.

Im sure I'll have down days and worries in the months ahead (so I'll be back) but I'd highly recommended this opp to anyone considering it. It's changed my life dramatically already, can't wait to get the right one done!

Thanks for all the advice and support hipsters :-)

If its the surgery you're worried about Lucite, don't be. I had to report to admissions at 7am operation at 11am. My rear literally did not touch the seat in between tests so there was no time to get scared. Also the people in admissions are super lovely.

When you first stood up were you putting any weight on leg with your new hip? Did you get sick because of pain or just from standing upright?

48 hrs to surgery and getting hebee jebees!

Hi Lee, the sickness was nothing to do with pain it was all in my head/fear (needed a little cry). Personally I've found the post opp discomfort to be nothing compared to the joint pain I had. Don't worry about pain, you get really good pain relief 😃 You can use the new hip as soon as you're able, I could not believe the increased range of motion the day after surgery!

Good luck with your opp 😃

Everyone is different I guess. It also depends what you mean by recovery. A full recovery takes up to a year but return to work can be between 6 and 8 weeks.

Its only you who know how comfortable it will feel to put weight on it, the physio nurses will encourage you to walk from the word go, your pain control will also help, 3-4 as in scale of 1-10 and 10 being the worst.. They start you off on a walker in the ward, then your assessed on the next thing which is crutches then walking with sticks. You will also be given anti sickness tablets because of the medication you will be on. I had trh 8 weeks ago and well on the mend

That was what I was thinking, so was thrown for a loop when told no weight bearing for 3 weeks. Then just minimal for another three. Really scared me, being so restricted for so long, and I have trouble with a walker. Probably need wheelchair first few weeks . That threw me!!!!!

But pales, I really , really  appreciate the positive thinking and support. Thinking good thoughts now and praying some too!

      Thankyou, Lee

We have a nerve in our body called the Vegas or spelled differently, and it is what causes us to get sick, blood pressure drop, nauseated and even pass out when stimulated. Major trauma like major surgery can trigger it.

      God bless you,

I am due to have a thr on the right next Wednesday and I want to cancel as I am so scared. Not sure exactly what I'm scared of.

Hi Catrin, you can cancel right up until the point they knock you out. Why not go along and see, you have nothing to lose? The admissions nurses are really lovely, I was so reassured by then. Once you go to admissions the time flies and the next thing you know you're having a cup of tea in recovery.

If you have any specific fears ask them here, everyone on this group is great.

      All the best!

      Jennifer
