I don't know....

Hello I'm 17 and just came across this website while looking up things about ovarian cysts. I've been feeling off ever since my last period (VERY emotional) and then a week ago I start getting pain on my left side and then right along with feeling pretty nauseous. I went to my doctor where they told me that it's probably just some cramps because I'm supposed to start my period soon but said they would order a ct scan to make sure that it isn't appendicitis. This morning I went and then received the results this afternoon. The doctor called and said I have multiple cysts on both of my ovaries and need to make an appointment with my ob/gyn as soon as possible. I plan on making an appointment tomorrow but I'm a little freaked out. I'm sorry I just kind of wanted to talk to people about it because I'm not really sure what's going to happen. Does anyone have any guesses about what you think they might do about the cysts?

Hi honey,
I am no expert but have a 6cm corpus luteum cyst on my left ovary which was twisting my ovaries and causing lots of pain.
Basically cysts are a natural occurrence every single month for woman. Our eggs mature and are contained in a cyst. Each month 2 weeks on average before our period begins, we release the egg during a process called ovulation so that we can get pregnant. When we ovulate, the cyst ruptures, releasing the mature egg into the fallopian tube which moves down the tube to be fertilized. The cyst is pretty tiny, and generally dissolves back into the blood stream. Sometimes these cysts don't dissolve and can get filled with fluid or blood and grow. There are many types of cysts, the most common being the corpus luteum cyst, which is the one I am referring to. So it's all natural and not a foreign growth. It's generally nothing to worry about unless is causes pain. Going to the ob/gyn is a good idea as she can do an ultrasound to check the size of the cyst and determine what type of cyst it is. I am sharing a link with you to read that covers the different types so you can get a better idea before you visit the ob. But if there is no pain, no worries

Good luck and update after your visit

Thank you! I will. Is it strange that I have a lot though. I have five just on one ovary and they said I had some on my right ovary too but didn't say how many

No it's not strange at all. A woman is born with every egg she will have for the rest of her life. Each month a few eggs begin the process of maturing, so there will be many many cysts. But it's just one egg that matures every month and so one cyst that grows a little bigger. But we have plenty. It sounds gross cause cysts sounds like a foreign growth, but it's not
They are all functional and serve a wonderful purpose. I am surprised and disappointed doctors don't explain these things. Then they complain when we do research on the internet or in books because "nothing" or no information can replace their experience. But they really should try to be more explanatory especially since they studied this stuff for so many years.
