hi all, im quite scared and don't know what to do, il just give a bit of background first and be as brief as poss.

im 41, i had my first UTI in february, it came from nowhwere, i had put it down to the baileys irish cream (as i get seriously dehydrated when i drink alcohol for some reason and that started a year or so ago) i was really bad with that first one, blood in wee, fever, chills, pain in tummy, you name it i had it, was given Trimethoprim and felt a huge difference several hours later.  a month later i finished the baileys, 4am i drove myself down to A&E as i had the signs of not being able to empty my bladder, they gave me same medication, i felt rough driving home with some strange pains shooting through my bottom, but again several hours later was feeling better. late last month i got another, wasn't too bad this time, just felt a little rough and not able to empty bladder, same medication began to feel better, the last day of taking the antibiotic i had that unable to empty my bladder (i had a weeks worth of Trimethoprim each time) i've now been given Nitrofurantoin, been on that since this thursday and i still don't feel right, my bladder is still not fully emptying and im petrified that il go to the toilet and just nothing will come out and bladder getting fuller and fuller, i don't know what to do. two lots of antibiotics continuous and it STILL coming back, surely this is not normal?

please can i have some advice as this is really worrying as i dare not leave home anymore, i thought my slipped dsic was life changing enough.

thanks

Ok.Trimethoprim is not really effective neither 100mg nitrofurantoin.

I got recurring infection since last 2months after having too much alocohol the first time.

The above 2 antibiotics didnt work.

3rd time got augmentine which got the infection cleared as per urine culture last week. But I still got flank pains and back pain  which is really worrisome. Now taking D-massone from Amazon.

I havnt slept properly sibce last week as i it really hurts when lie down.

Go to your GP as many times you need to till you are sattisfied.

Ask for a ultrasound and CT scan and cystoscopy.

Get uribe culture done again to make sure infection is gone. Dont rely on dip test as ibfection doesnt always appears on that.

Get all the tests done to exclude all the dreaded causes.

i have a CT scan on Tuesday...fingers crossed.

Also, watch out for Nitrofurantoin. Read the pamphalte for side effects. I had to go to AE as my hands and feet went numb and I was dizzy.

word of advice- stop reading stuff on internet. Itll make life miserable.

Go private if you can otherwise NHs will take 2-3 months to get appointments.

just get your tests done and put your mind to rest.

    hope you feel better soon.

    take care

    Hi Fed-up,

Hope you are feeling little better. Since January of this year had recurring UTIs even though I drink lots of water. Went twice to casualty in January in fact and was prescribed the very same antibiotics you had which seems to be the norm but they made me extremely sick and unwell and was literally bedridden for 4 wks with all those awful symptoms ie chills, uncontrollable shaking, high fever, blood in urine (minimal thank goodness) vomiting and no appetite. I lost 4lbs in weight. Then was prescribed Augmentin which worked. Long story cut short. 3 times I asked for a referral which fell on deaf ears when I finally called my Doctor, screamed down the phone at him and have been to see a Consultant. Will be having a ct scan with dye in couple of weeks and am on low dose of antibiotics. Will then have cystoscopy and hopefully will find the cause. E.Coli is the commonest bacteria.Vaginal dryness too needs to be sorted if you are an older woman which I am.Replens is excellent. DO drink at least 2 litres of water per day to flush out the bacteria. Do not hold your wee go straight away. Sit well back on the loo and get out as much wee as possible! Oh and yes. I have avoided coffee, wine, all acidic foods, spices etc. The so called bladder irritants! Have regular cranberry pills all to no avail. frown Consultant told me that these foods are not the cause of my problems! Watch this space! Good luck to you everybody out there reading these posts.biggrin

Hi fed up. Sorry to hear about your UTI. Firstly, your urine needs to be sent to the lab to be cultured. Secondly, you MUST drink at least 2-3 litres of WATER daily to flush out whatever bacteria you have causing this problem (doesn't always, but still DRINK WATER).. Thirdly, INSIST and I repeat INSIST AND INSIST AND INSIST that you be referred to a Consultant Urologist who is specialized IN UTIs. Unfortunately, we ladies are subject to getting this condition especially as we age. You are still young and this can be sorted. I'm currently under a specialist after having screamed at my doctor that giving me antibiotics and sending me away no longer worked for me! Good luck and keep posting with your results. xxx
