I feel like I can't take a deep breath

I have been trying to figure this issue out for 3 years. It feels like I physically can't take a deep breath, all the time - 24/7, no matter what I am doing. This issue started when I turned 19, my sophomore year in college. I have had a chest x-ray, an EKG, an ECHO. I have had my hormones and thyroid levels checked. I have gone to an asthma-allergy doctor. I have seen a psychiatrist and tried 9 different medications for anxiety. I have seen a counselor for a year and a half and have not found anything that helps or any answers. I do not identify with Generalized anxiety due to the simple fact that this issue persists all of the time, even when I am (or should be) at my most relaxed. I have been told that it seems like my brain has been re-wired and almost stuck in "fight mode" (fight-or-flight) which I could see as a possibility. I am currently trying biofeedback/ neurofeedback, which I am optimistic about.  I just want to see if anyone has had a similar issue or has any suggestions.

I’ve had this issue off and on for a few months and it’s really unsettling, it happens at work and it really gets to me and can last for a few days at a time- nearly getting a full breath but not quite, unless I manage to get the odd forced yawn in. Anyway- someone recommended eating spicy food to make me breathe heavier, this actually helped a bit, but last thing I want to do at 8:30am is eat a chilli. I’ve recently started carrying round extra strong mints- these seem to help me breathe a bit slower and deeper, somewhat relief! Just thought it was an idea that I’d not heard before that people could try out..... always worth a try, hope this helps!!

Good day, I too am experiencing symptoms of not being able to complete a yawn or breathe deeply..basically i have shallow breathing or shortness of breath. I did chest x rays, a cardio stress test, blood work for a possible heart attack, and all were negative. Also, i visited a lung specialist where i did high a definition ct scan of my lungs with dye,but that looked fine also. It was also recommended i do a sleep apnea study due to my interrupted sleep pattern at night. However the lung doc said that cannot be responsible for my daytime breathing issues. I'm 38yrs and this cindition just randomly happened one week ago..may 10 2018. My blood work indicated moderate high sugar and cholesterol, but can be safely managed with proper diet and exercise(ironically which i cant do because breathing gets worse)

So far i have seen a cardiologist, lung specialist, and an ENT doctor and they are all alluding to anxiety. I am not convinced because i have NEVER experienced breathing issues even when nervous or stressed. Its only natural symptoms relating to anxiety would show because we are all concerned with getting a diagnoses which seems to be eluding all these doctors.

I will try the massage technique and hopefully there would be some relief.

Finally, and above all i'm a Christian, and prayer should NEVER be discounted.

Wow! You said exactly what I've been feeling for a year now. Every doctor tells me it's anxiety related but I've always been an anxious person and this has never happened. If you get any answers

      Please let me know!!

      Hi ry,

i gave up with doctors they cant understand feeling like u struggle to breathe in will cause extreme anxiety.

I also never had a breathing issue when feeling anxiouse about anything.

I hope ur problem does not get severe as i felt like i was constantly choaking. And ended up not sleeping and eating hardly. Only thing people suggest is hyperventillation which only 1 lung doctor i payed a lot of money for said was causing it and could of started after a virus with no tests to check.thats meant to improve with exercise but i couldnt.

Also i had no feeling of needing to yawn or gulp air just extreme chest tension.

My breathlessness improved after i stopped occasionaly coughing up weird rubbbery strings despite being told my lungs were clear. After that i tried to ignore the chest tension no longer panic from it but made no immediate difference i still feel tension in my lower side ribs and a blocked feeling inbetween. I dont understand what this is as my ri bs are not sore.

Im just hopi ng this continues to gradually go away.

At the worst life was a living hell for 2 months.

I would suggest people try Nac as it should help any physical or mental aspect to this.

There are lots of herbs also for stress if thats contributing.

Hi!  I normally don’t respond to posts, but when I saw this chain, I thought I should let you all know what I found having this similar issue with breathing problems.

My story is extremely similar to all of you with the feeling of my lungs not getting air even when the tests came back normal and being prescribed all kinds of medication for anxiety.  I finally found a doctor who believed something was wrong but admitted he couldn’t figure out what it was and suggested I start writing down what I was taking into my body.

I started doing this, and after a week found the common denominator in all of my troubles was yellow dye...as in Yellow 5, 6, etc.

After cutting it from my diet, the problems still persisted, until I discovered yellow dyes are in nearly everything!  I cut it out of my diet, soaps, shampoos, body washes, cosmetics, perfumes and body sprays, medicines...literally everything, and I feel 100% better!

It turns out the dye was causing an allergic reaction that was giving me asthma like symptoms because my body had developed a huge build up and just couldn’t take anymore.  This sort of allergy is not one that is normally tested for, and I was actually informed by another doctor who has the same allergy that it’s one of the most overlooked allergies.

Like all of you, I hope my story might help someone else, as well, as you are all correct...not being able to breathe is intolerable and being told you basically have some sort of mental issue causing it when you know you don’t is even worse!!

I hope you all find your solutions , if you haven’t already!

Thanks for this information. Yellow dye...hmm I'll need to give this a try.. it's something I should be able to eliminate easily.

Look at the ingredients in the things you put on or in your body from shampoo soap, cakes and candy, snack foods. Etc... Everything... Check the ingredients label. You will see yellow, or blue, or red #4 , or any number after the color. Doesn't matter what number... Any yellow color dye in it... Eliminate from your body or diet.

Hi!  The yellow dyes not only color things like food, soaps, and cosmetics, but they also serve as preservatives from what I understand because you will find them in foods and items which are not a single shade of yellow.  Tartrazine is the most common, Yellow 5, but there are several different varieties as well.  My doctor said our bodies can only take so much of the preservatives and dyes used in just about everything these days, and new allergies to them are coming out on a regular basis for which there are no tests yet, so we only have process of elimination right now to determine them.

I have the same problem. I feel like I'm breathing something foul. I can feel a dot like dust go up my nose like spores. And when it gets to the back of my throat it feels grainy going down. When I cough it up, I can feel it in my chest. My nose feels swollen full of dust. My lips and tongue sizzle and feel sunburned. I think its our environment. Its so toxic now its making us ill.

Sounds like an allergic reaction to your environment. You might check it out with an allergist.
