I feel like my brain and body is shutting down at 22 yo

I have had problems for over 3 years now

There’s was a point in time in particular where I feel like it all started. I was a pretty athletic bloke who worked out a lot and I had a pre work out drink (which is essentially a highly caffeinated drink) one night. About 2 hours after taking it I ended up on the floor with a heart rate over 180bpm. From that day on I couldn’t drink alcohol anymore. I used to drink a fair bit socially but I was never a raging alcoholic or anything. But over about 3 months I went from being able to drink any amount to not being able to drink at all. If I consume alcohol I would feel so agitated and mentally out of it. Not like being drunk mentally I didn’t feel right. I feel like I can’t think and I can’t even talk or respond to people even after 2 or 3 standard drinks. It’s gotten to the point now where I can’t even try have 1 standard drink because I just mentally feel so u well and I feel so out of it. I slowly became intolerant to any SSRI and SNRI medications. In the past year I started seeing a physiatrist who every time he puts me on medication I am extremely sensitive to the starting low dosages. Now before this I had been on 20mg of citalapram and not experienced anything like these symptoms. Again I feel agitated and mentally out of it on even small amounts of any anti depressant. I have tried 4 different types including valdoxen which is meant to be the “rolls Royce” of medication but even on a small dosage I get so fatigued mentally and physically, I felt again out of it. My psychiatrist said that sometimes people do react to it even though it is strange to react like this at such low dosages. He dismissed the fact I could once handle a normal dosage but now I can’t have any.

I used to be able to have dexamphetamines or dexies. This was just to help me study which I got off a mate which I know wasn’t right but I used to be able to have up to 2 or 3 at a time and have it on a night out with no symptoms of anything at all. Now I can’t even have half of one without getting weird headaches and mentally feeling off and out of it.

I slowly started having panic attacks where now they’re a common thing.

My anxiety turned into a depression that’s gotten to the point where I feel like I have no joy in anything

My tremors which I’ve had a neurologist check out ages ago are getting worse. I’ve been told by 2 different neurologists that they haven’t seen a tenor like mine where my muscles shake and jitter when ever I flex or move them.

My fatigue is rapidly getting worse and my body is constantly aching now. This has only started in the 3 months. I feel so fatigued mentally and physically. I can hardly move now without feeling dead and I have brain fog for a lot of the day. I have seen so many specialists and doctors and all I’ve gotten is I might have chronic fatigue and functional neurological disorder, but I feel like this doesn’t disprove my inability to have medications or alcohol. I feel like I’m at a loss and loosing my body and mind. ive had ever blood test in the book and its all fine.

Sorry to hear of your condition.

All I can say is that your claim of brain fog and fatigue is very common when people take many different meds for depression, anxiety and many other reasons shrinks treat patients for.

Folk I know who are on such meds complain about the above but, so far at least, think they are better off with the drugs and the side effects than not taking the drugs.

That said, I would ask a GP "what can i take to combat the fatigue". He/she may prescribe something useful

    Hello Brendan.

For the past six months I have been going through what I believe you are going through. My first incident was in August of 2020. I was having some coffee and a little bit of some weed like a normally have done for over a decade. Jumped in my car to run some errands. made it about a mile down the road and passed out. My whole body just shut down. I came to and drove home, called my wife on the way and asked her to call an ambulance. when I arrived I got out of my car walked up to my wife. I told her I was sorry and that I was going to die. I collapsed to the ground and turned gray. The ems showed up and took me to the ER. The ER ran test and sent me home saying I was dehydrated. Three weeks later it happened again. That time the ER said I was having an anxiety attack. for the next 4 months I felt dizzy and weak some days better than others. I went to a dentist and had a ton of dental work done, thinking maybe I had a bad tooth that was infecting body. I went the chiropractor thinking I had nerves damaged. Never once in my life have I had anxiety until all this started. Now it's weekly. Nothing was changing how I felt physically and mentally.

In early January I collapsed again and ended up in the ER again. Again they tell me that I am a very healthy man. and sent me home. And again today, Feb 14 2021 I felt that shut down feeling come again. I have had every heart test done they can think of at this point and blood test as well.

What caught my attention about your post is the intolerance to drugs and alcohol. I used to be able to smoke pot all day long. whether it was a gram or 2 grams it didn't matter. I could drink wine all night and feel drunk just like most people. Since this started back in August 2020, all of that has changed. I can't drink even half a glass without feeling like I I'm out of my mind. Like my body is going to shut down. One small puff of weed makes me feel higher than I ever been in my whole life. It is very uncomfortable. I have given up on drinking and smoking. Additionally I have quit a 25 year habit of cigarette smoking.

I describe the feeling like this. My whole body is a bunch of light switches and each of is being switch off one after another.

Have you found an answer yet???

39 year old male. I know my post is all over the board, I'm not a writer.

    Hi Brendan,

There's a neurological disorder called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), it has very similar symptoms to what your describing. The ED commonly misdiagnoses it for anxiety because it has similar symptoms, one being the fast heart rate. Most people with POTS also can't drink alcohol as it makes them feel ill, they also get brain fog and headaches.

I was the same, I had been to the Emergency countless times and doctors... there's nothings wrong! Drove me nuts, just something to ask your doctor about anyway, especially if your fainting and your heart rate goes up regularly.
