Hi Kat, had large bunion on big toe shaved and a tendon release between bunion toe and next toe 5 weeks ago. Where I had the large bunion shaved still looks very swollen and lumpy so I won't know if it has had enough shaved off till the swelling subsides.   Not sure how it will turn out.   The procedure I had is called a McBride bunionectomy. Could you private message me with photo of your foot if possible?

I had both of my bunionettes removed this year. The first in July on the right foot. That one I did have swelling around the joint for a couple of weeks. The scar was kind of puffy for awhile too. The second one I had done last week and it is rapidly healing. I have not experience the swelling that as I did with the right foot.

I did a lot of icing throughout the day. I only took one week off from work each time and that entire week I propped it up and iced it a lot. I have a sit down job, so I did icing\propping a lot there too. Icing and elevation in my opinion is the best way for a speedy recovery.

You really sound as though you did everything right after your bunion ops.   I had my bunion op 6 weeks ago and havnt iced mine at all but must admitt I still have a lot of swelling round my big toe where I had my bunion shaved. I still keep it elevated at night on pillows and when I sit down during the day. Still cannot fit into a normal shoe, maybe I'm just being too impatient. Do exercises about 5 times a day as well as being on my feet a bit lomger now. I think I am probably expecting too much too quickly.   My toe seems to be swollen all the time and then when I walk around the house for awhile my whole foot seems to get swollen.    Then I elevate it for awhile and it does help except my toe stays swollen. Do you think the icing is the answer and would help my recovery?

Hi Kat, Hopefully we'll get there but not sure how long it will take!   The swelling is a real problem and just seems to take so long to settle.

Before moving to England 31 years ago, I had a bunionette removed in the podiatrist's office.  He numbed the area, took it out, and I walked to my car with a bandage on it.  Now it's come back, and podiatrists in the UK don't perform these operations as I discovered.

You have to consult your GP who then refers you to a surgeon.  You initially have a £150 talk with him to discuss the problem, and then a few weeks later you're knocked out for the procedure.

I'm going to the states this weekend, and my mother has arranged an appointment with her podiatrist to see what he can do without the hospital interference as I have no insurance to cover me.  He may shave it, but then I saw a post here mentioning nerve damage.

    Any suggestions?
