I have a continual, deep pain/ache in practically the whole of my leg. I use ice on it (frozen peas!) a great deal of the time and I take my pain killers. At night I cannot sleep because there is nowhere New I can put my leg which does not become become equally painful within a few seconds. Anybody else have this problem? Also, I had to stop taking Diclofenac a few days before the op. How long before I can take it again?

I have just had my first of both knees replaced and I am still on

the pain drugs they gave me in hospital, gabapentin, naproxin,

and nevopan + parasetomol it keeps the pain manageable but if

taken over the8 hour time it hurts really bad.

I can't take any morphine base or tramadol as it sends me crazy and violent vomiting, not sure what your drugs are but these and ice packs work for me , I ice pack 29 mins the exercise, hope it helps you I got my new knee 5th nov, can walk a bit now. paul

Hi, all.  I'm so glad I found this site.  I had total knee replacement 4 weeks ago.  It's good to read how others are doing and all the different comments.

My knee seems quite stiff and it's still swollen, but it has gone done quite a bit since the surgery.  All the odd pains throughout the leg at times, but I guess that's normal.  Yes, it's difficult getting comfortable at night.  I've done what some of the others have.  I lie on the "good" side and put a contour pillow between my legs.  Seems to help.  I received physical therapy at home during the first week out of the hospital.  After that, my husband has driven me to the appointments at the physical therapy center.

Good luck to all.  I guess I'm an impatient patient, but it has been a pleasure comparing notes with others.  Btw, I like a lot of the U.K. Internet sites for health information.  I live in the U.S. (Chicago, IL), and I just find them a bit more thorough and, yes, interesting.  Take care, all.

I am at 5 weeks today since I had my TKR at the age of 42, I have been feeling very dispondant with my recovery until reading this forum and now realise that I just have to be patient and that one great day is usually followed by a bad day.

I had a 90 degree bend on discharge from hospital, but lost it very quickly and am now at 95. I have found using the Exercycle has been very helpful though can not walk far and still using one crutch. I find that the knee gets very hot and stiff when I try walking is this normal at this stage?

I am also 10 days after my TKR. The surgeon also straightened my leg as it was quite badly bowed. I now have a beautifully straight leg that is probably half an inch longer now than my left leg ! The pain that first night was worse than anything I have encountered (even with the morphine !), and being someone that has always slept on his front , sleeping has been a big problem for me and getting comfortable in bed. But I was managing stairs at home alone after 3 days and walking unaided (without crutches or sticks) after 6 days (though not well of course). Am off painkillers now apart from one at bedtime and each day things seem to be getting easier. Bend I think is just past 90 degrees and am at physio tomorrow so will see they think I am progressing. Having been unsure what to expect before the op, I feel it has been better than I imagined. I am scheduled to have my second knee done middle april and now feel less trepidation about that. I held on as long as I could before getting the first one done (I was at hospital 8 years ago and the consultant told me that they had changed knees that were far better than mine - but I think living with the pain so long has perhaps given me a higher pain threshold). Reading everyone on here it is clear we are all different. I am 54 years (young !) by the way

Hi David.I had the same bowing as you and for a while after the op I felt that my leg was two inches longer but gradually that feeling went as my body readjusted. I am now two inches taller, back to my original height, and my leg is straight for the first time in forty years, since I broke it. Wish I'd had it done years ago. Carol, 10 weeks.

Hi David. I am now 4 weeks post op left tkr. I too had my bowed leg straightened. Initially I had a lot of pain on the outer side of knee. That's eased but I am getting outer thigh pain. On a daily basis. I wonder if this Is to do with the straightened procedure. I have to walk with one crutch as I find myself limping. My knee is still very swollen so loads ice. Bend is 95 but physio says it will improve as swelling goes.

Hi Robert , can't say I had same pain as you are exeriencing. Need to keep pushing yourself as much as you can through the pain barrier. The swelling is a pain I agree and ice is the only answer. I am now 7 weeks on , 125 bend and back working in Asia . Trying hard not to walk with a limp but because my right leg now is much longer it feels very weird. Second knee booked for 10th April which shoul balance me out I hope. Keep pushing and good luck

Hi David, thanks for your reply. This was my second tkr. Both completely different experiences. Do not compare! My leg difference is now 1cm so I wear a heel raise which helps. At what point did you go onto exercise bike ? I'm hoping my leg pains will go. As the forum knows it's all time.

When I saw surgeon a week ago he was managing my expectation with the second one saying as u say both may be completely different. I bought a pedal exerciser from Amazon for £25 that I used 3 weeks or so after which helped to force the bend , hurt but was worth it I think. Will be in gym tomorrow on exercise bike for first time since the op and leg extension machine so that will be interesting I think
