I had a punch biopsy done on mole

I had a punch biopsy done on a skeptical looking mole on leg. Usually when I have gotten a mole removed, they remove they entire area. When I got this one done, he only removed a puncture mark size and left the remaining. Is there any reason as to why he would only partially remove this? Please help.

I guess the sample did not have to be a big sample, to do a test on the mole. I suppose removing the whole area benefits you more than just a part.
