I had posterior Vaginal repair 5 days ago and I’m in a lot of pain any advice would be appreciated.

I had posterior wall repair on oct 17-17. 2 year after having my son. He was very small a little over 6lb. Finally after 2 years and after seeing 2other OB’s. the final and 3rd  OB told me that I had rectecel. I have not been feeling great. Had bad constipation till last night which was Friday. It was so bad. I just started to cry. I had my son with no meds. So when I say this is worse I mean it. Now I have bleeding and I’m scared I pulled my stitches. Any advise would be great. Just feel really depressed About it all and kind of sorry for myself. I just dont understand why all this happened to me after one child and a small one at that. Hoping to hear from anyone that has gone through this before.

    Hi jaz

I would say that it is very early days and I suspect you are expecting far to much far to soon.

I have only had 1 child but he was big 9 lbs 2. I had a anterior and mild posterior repair in August 2016. It took me much longer than I was told to recover, it really took it out of me to be honest. My Surgeon told me I could go for a  sea swim after 2 weeks ( I live on Oz)  but there was no way! It was 8 weeks before I would even entertain the thought and even then I felt fragile and at least 4 months before I would consider any bedroom antics. With regards to your bleeding this happened to me but I was told it was normal and it was when the stiches start to give way.

I know it's not fair this has happened to you but it happens to a lot of women just not spoken about much. All you can do is rest and be patient. I am sure will be fine given time and if you are really concerned go back and see your Surgeon.

      Hi Liz,

Thank you for your response and sharing your story. I think your right I’m expecting a lot too soon. My OB said I can go to work in 2 weeks but I can’t see that. I’m going to call her tmw about the bleeding.  I’m 36 and after this surgery and all the research I see it happens a lot. It’s just so sad that it’s not talked about. I was ignorant to it. I wanted everything natural as I thought our bodies were made to give birth naturally so it will all go back to normal. I wish more ppl talked about this. Also the surgeons should really give a realistic time frame so we are not thinking something is wrong.  I have been taking it easy which is so hard for me but I just want to get better.

I still needed to be on stool softeners at that point.  Everything is so tender that even the thought of being constipated was scary.  Im so sorry that happened.

if you need pain meds for the surgery pain you should ask for them.  If the pain is caused by the constipation, your doctor should be able to help with that too.  I was given miralax (osmotic stool softener) and senna (stimulant laxative) post op and I also  used glycerin suppositories.  The suppositories made it easy to go without straining which was really important to me.

I hope you can figure out how to feel better aoon.  Recovery can be slow but it shouldnt be that painful.  Fwiw, I had my surgery when my youngest was 3.

I hope that helped a bit and best of luck to you.  The first week was really rough for me but things got easier every day, even if only a little bit.  Feel free to PM me if you like.

      Hi Dorry,

Thank you for your response. I started to take stool softener before surgery and after 1 in the am 1 in the pm.  I’m trying to not strain and just breath. I really thought I was going to be ok as the day after surgery I was not in much pain. I woke up with a lot of pain but the next day felt good. I actually had this surgery while on my period so I had a bit of bleeding but now I can tell this is not from my period and something else. As it’s red and it kind drips out of me. I was told before surgery that if I soak a pad within an hour that’s a cause for concern. I think I’m just worried and feeling restless. I’m trying not to take as much pain meds as it just causes more constipation and I think makes me emotional and feel sorry for myself and really all mothers. After all we go thorough I just didn’t expect this one. This too shall pass ??🙏

You need call the emergency doctor, I had a cyctocel and rectocyl repair 5 weeks after op and me Being stupid thought all was good. I was bored and started to move furniture, then started bleeding, I called doctor and had to then call the ward I was on to be seen quickly as stitches had popped so you need to call your doctor, also take lots of lactose to help to go and eat loads of fruit & vegetables, oh and make sure you take your pain killers, I hope it all improves for you all the best xxx

Hi, I’m sorry that happened to you. I hope things have resolved and ur back on track. How much did u bleed? I’m having a bit of bleeding like it drips red. I think it’s normal but I will call my doctor tmw. It’s so hard when u don’t really know what to expect.  Also just the way I’m feeling is not helping. Just want to snap out of it. I pray for us all that our surgeries our successful and all this will be something if the past. God I’m so emotional. I really hate it.

Hi Jaz , I had a anterior and prosterior repair on the 15th Sept and like you I was in so much pain. Try and take a laxative every day and plenty of veg and fruit as the straining causes lots more problems. I know I bled through straining before but since  using lactalose every day during the first few weeks I never had that again. I would get your stitches checked by the GP as mine were fine but too tight and this caused more pain initially. You are not alone my lovely lots of us have felt down in the dumps after this op as the recovery is hard going for the first month or so and then you need to take it easy as it takes it out of you . This forum is amazing and it’s great to hear from others that have been through the same op so post when you need to . Be kind to yourself and get a box set and try and rest. I know it’s hard when you are a mum I have three children but I have had to make myself take it easy. I hope it eases quickly for you xx

      Hi Janet,

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I’m glad Things have got better for you. 🙏  It really does take a toll on you and I really didn’t realize that.  I can handle pain I give birth with no meds but I was mentally prepared for that, but this is something else and I really didn’t realize how difficult it would be.  My son is a little over 2  and he is so active. I have my husband who has been helping and also asked my mom for some help but they both work and can only take so much time off. I planned for 2 weeks of help. I though I would be good by then but, just not really be able to lift anything havey. Now I’m not so sure. Especially after reading comment that 4 weeks has passed and some ladies are still in pain. My doctor said I could go back to work in 2 weeks. I just don’t really think at this point that it is realistic.  I have been taking stool softener 1 in the am 1in the pm from before surgery. I think it’s the drugs as well. I have cut down a lot those as well. The cibstipation had got better. I’m going to call my surgeon office in the am and let them know about the bleeding.  This forum really is helpful and it’s nice to hear about other ladies that have gone through this. I just never realized how many moms are affected by this. It really makes me sad. We go through so much as mothers. Hope u have speedy recovery.

Hi  Jaz,  your feeling exactly as I did after surgery and i maintain that  this operation is completely misunderstood for recovery as very few of us feel ready to go back to work after a few weeks off. I had three natural births with an episiotomy and like you I feel like this pain was worse . I stopped taking the co codamol  from the Dr as it was making me constipated and just alternated between paracetamol and  Nurofen . I am still off of work 5 weeks later and my GP has signed me off for another 4 weeks . Get checked out and ensure your Dr signs you off for longer . Can you get help for a little while longer ? This forum has been better than all the post op info I have researched because it’s clear that none of us have been given a wealth of information on recovery , certainly the information from the hospital for most of us have been unrealistic.  I am so sorry your going through this but let us know how your get on at the Dr ‘s and I hope you are feeling better soon xx

I am five weeks postop. I was instructed by my doctor to put anabiotic ointment  on the incision for the first week. It seem to help the dryness  and stretching especially while having a BM.   I was instructed to take stool softeners once in the morning and once in the evening. But you want to make sure you do not get constipated. I was instructed to take whatever laxative  I needed to have a BM to prevent constipation.  Milk of magnesia is what I found works for me to help with constipation however I have never heard of anybody else using it and being successful so you want to make sure you’re following your doctors orders.

I was unable to sit until week four. I was instructed to use ice packs on my bottom for the first 24 hours after surgery to reduce the swelling.  They were like a huge pad but they were an ice pack! I had never seen anything like it but they were a lifesaver. It seems the heating pad on my bottom cause swelling and then I couldn’t have a BM.  I am in the US and it seems the instructions here given by my doctor are different from many others.  I had to quit taking the opioid pain medications because they were causing constipation. So I resorted to ibuprofen. I laid down more than I was up for the first two weeks. The first week is really rough.

Roll out of bed, pushing up with your arms, no leaning over to pick things up off the floor.  I use one of those gadgets to pick things up off the floor.   I have now learned to brace while clearing my throat or coughing.

My husband does all the housework, cooking, cleaning.  Good luck and let us know how you get through this. I can honestly say I am finally glad to get to week five! I am scheduled to return to work October 30 but there is no way I can do that at this point so I suspect it will be another two weeks minimum, but everyone heals at a different pace, keep that in mind.

      Hi Dlee,

Week 5! That’s sounds great. I’m glad you have made it and feeling better. I just can’t see it yet and after today being told I probably did pop some stitch far back. Really upsets me. I’m in Canada and I think the info is really not realistic I told my surgeon today I can’t see myself going back to work in a week. She said first week is hard.  After the event on Friday night which I believe caused my bleeding. I have been pretty regular thank god.  It’s hard to take it easy especially when ur a mom. I love it that u had a little gadget to pick up things.  I have been trying to rest and just elevate my feet but she says to take it more easy so hopefully after these pills  my bleeding will stop.

Hi Jaz34341, so sorry to hear that you are in pain and finding it all so difficult, sending hugs. I had posterior and anterior repair plus sacropinious fixation on 18 October. I have been provided with good pain management. You don't say what medication you have been advised to take or prescribed since your op and not sure which country you are in. I am in the UK and have been prescribed paracetamol 500g 2 tablets x4 per day, ibuprofen 400mg 1 tablet x3 per day, codeine phosphate 30mg 1 or 2 tablets X 4 per day. Lactulose 15ml X 2 per day. All are for 2 weeks apart from ibuprofen which is one week. As my blood count dropped post op I have been given iron tablets and to protect stomach lining from ibuprofen I have a daily dose of omeprazole too. I got mixed up with the timing of the Meds and was in some pain plus I hate effects of codeine but with the help of an app and remembering to take the Meds regularly and importantly before pain kicks in helps. Rest is important too, but not easy with a baby to care for. I hope to get the codeine down to just at night soon but still need some in the day. Not faced a proper bowel movement yet but hoping the Lactulose and gallons of water, prunes and detox tea will do the trick! Take care and check what pain relief is suitable for you, aside from the codeine, the stuff I have been prescribed is also available over the counter. Good luck xx

Hi Redhead, thanks for the 🤗 I live in Canada. Ill have to che j the name but,I have finished most of my pain meds but after Friday night I really tried to cut it down bc of my constipation.  The pain of the constipation is worse for me than the pain from surgery.  I had lots of dried fruit and prune juice and all together was pretty bad result. But after that night I have been pretty regular.  I hope you get a relief bc I know how bad it is. I did the same thing I have an alarm set for all my meds. Really for everything. I know it’s hard to take it easy with a little one. I have been trying but clearly hadn’t work. I hope my bleeding stops after these meds. I hope u continue to feel better and whatever u do don’t strain. U don’t want to pop anything.

HI Jaz you poor soul yes it’s a really tough recovery I’m sorry to say. I am a year post op tot and rectocele.  Take lactulose and any constipation avoiding food you can! Even one year in i can’t get constipated as it’s painful. It’s unlikely you’ve split a stitch as they are very very secure. Search in here for Matron who is very knowledgeable on this site under tvt, rectocele etc. Plenty meds’ and water but avoid opiates for the constipation also frozen peas do help! It does get better x

Hi, it’s really seems to be such a difficult process and the lack of info doesn’t help. Thank  you  I’ll will checkout  for Matron.  Unfortunately my surgeon seems to think I must of popped one somewhere towards the back as she was not able to see anything and felt all were secure and intact. I have been taking it easy but I know it’s from Friday night. I just can’t wait for all this to get better
