I had a revision with lots of bone grafting 8 weeks ago and feel worried about my hip as it hurts quite a lot. I didn't know the bone was supposed to regrow. Mine was after 22 good years with my first replacement hip. Did yours hurt?
Where are you by the way?

You and everyone needing revision need to read up on the reasons for osteolysis or bone loss; so that it can be prevented. Do you know what causes it? It is very difficult to fix after it happens.
I am due for a hip replacement soon, so I wanted to make sure that I gave myself the best opportunity for long term success. It's my body and I am completely responsible for everything that the Doctor does to it, not the Doctor.
Here is what I found:
Plastic and metal wear residues are not compatible with the human body. Your body's reaction to these particles causes bone loss. Although the particles are very small; 500,000 particles can be created with every step. Ceramic parts are very hard, creating minimal wear and so far I haven't read of any reactions to any ceramic residue. (On the Internet a professional golfer drives one of the ceramic balls down the fairway and it appears to damage the club, not the ceramic ball head, as I would have expected.) If anybody has read of any reactions please let us know. But so far it appears to me to be the 'least harmful' of the hip replacement options. It is really a last resort for me.

I use a hot water bottle at night in bed on the sore hip. My belief is that it speeds healing, which would help the graft to heal. Just drink lots of fluids so that your kidneys can clean your system and flush the particles that are created through healing, out of your system.
After 22 years your body has developed an allergy to the plastic and metal particles from the prosthesis. That is why it sees your bones as the source of the infection and you have bone loss. Please check it for yourself on the Internet; but I can not understand why a doctor would put metal and plastic back into a joint that failed because of the metal and plastic in the first place.
Please consider ceramic on ceramic, if you will, for your next joint replacement. It appears to be inert in the human body.
If you continue to have pain in your revision it may be that it is coming from your body's reaction to the metal and plastic. A course of anibiotics may be necessary if there is infection there. Always add a probiotic or yogurt to your diet during and after antibiotic treatment, to keep your stomach and tract working well. I hope that it will get better for you. Best wishes in that regard.
