Good luck Jackie. I  do hope this revision solves the problem you have.

I had a revision with lots of bone grafting 8 weeks ago and feel worried about my hip as it hurts quite a lot. I didn't know the bone was supposed to regrow.  Mine was after 22 good years with my first replacement hip. Did yours hurt?

Where are you by the way?

Hi Sally, I was born with hip Displaysia at five years old I had hip surgery and was in cast for very long time . Then at age 26 I had my first total hip replacement I never felt better after that surgery , and the hip was good for 22 years . Then about one year ago I was having alot back and hip pain , and i kept missing alot work, My doctor ordered x rays, and ct scan whih showed loosening of my hip left hip. So I went ahead and had revision which was very difficult for me to recover I had so much bone lose and couldnt put weight for 8weeks I also now have sciatic nerve damage . So i kept going to physical therapy and had epidurial shots I felt like i was getting somewhat better. I just knew something didnt feel right. so i found this surgeon that deals with children , and adults with hip displaysia, He ordered ct scan and that showed no bone regrowing and i have wire around my hip prothesis which is coming loose , and rubbing against my muscle, and he wants to do bone graft as well . Im in US San diego its been hard year 1/2

    Dear Jackie:

You and everyone needing revision need to read up on the reasons for osteolysis or bone loss; so that it can be prevented.  Do you know what causes it?  It is very difficult to fix after it happens.

I am due for a hip replacement soon, so I wanted to make sure that I gave myself the best opportunity for long term success.  It's my body and  I am  completely responsible for everything that the Doctor does to it, not the Doctor.

    Here is what I found:

Plastic and metal wear residues are not compatible with the human body.  Your body's reaction to these particles causes bone loss.  Although the particles are very small; 500,000 particles can be created with every step.  Ceramic parts are very hard, creating minimal wear and so far I haven't read of any reactions to any ceramic residue.  (On the Internet a professional golfer drives  one of the ceramic balls down the fairway and it appears to damage the club, not the ceramic ball head, as I would have expected.)    If anybody has read of any reactions please let us know.  But so far it appears to me to be the 'least harmful' of the hip replacement options.  It is really a last resort for me.

Hello Mikey,  Thank you for your information very helpful. I was born with hip displasia without hip socket . My first THR was Nov 1993 I was 26 , and after that surgery i never felt better . The hip relacement lasted 22 years almost unheard of . When i got be be 43 I started having back problems and pain in my thigh , When i was 45 I went to the doctor and the ct scan showed loosening of my prosthtic so I had to have revison . all those years of plastic , and metal being in there rubbing had finally taken its toll on my body So yes I had severe Osteolysis bone lose wires wrapped around my prothetis . The wires are coming loose and rubbing against my muscle . Im in so much pain doctor said that wire needs to come out and he wants to try bone graft which I heard good and bad so im going back in May 15 to have this done . I wish you well and thank you

OK thanks Mikey,  I have looked up osteolysis- it looks like that's what what happended to me at the end of a 22 year stretch of a great-functioning replacement hip (plastic and metal).  Nobody ever told me - the doctors just said there were big holes in my pelvis.  Those holes have now been filled 8 weeks ago) with morcellised (chopped up) femur heads from other hip replacement patients. (YES!)  i have a revision hip made of metal and plastic components.   It sems to be taking a while to stop hurting but the surgeon said the 6 week xrays  looked good.  Do you have any tips for me?  My left one will bne coming up for repair soon - done 18 years ago. Please share whatever you know...

Sally  (age 64, all due to dysplasia)

      Hi Sally

I use a hot water bottle at night in bed on the sore hip.  My belief is that it speeds healing, which would help the graft to heal.  Just drink lots of fluids so that your kidneys can clean your system and flush the particles that are created through healing, out of your system.

After 22 years your body has developed an allergy to the plastic and metal particles from the prosthesis.  That is why it sees your bones as the source of the infection and you have bone loss.  Please check it for yourself on the Internet; but I can not understand why a doctor would put metal and plastic back into a joint that failed because of the metal and plastic in the first place.

Please consider ceramic on ceramic, if you will, for your next joint replacement.  It appears to be inert in the human body.

If you continue to have pain in your revision it may be that it is coming from your body's reaction to the metal and plastic.  A course of anibiotics may be necessary if there is infection there.  Always add a probiotic or yogurt to your diet during and after antibiotic treatment, to keep your stomach and tract working well.    I hope that it will get better for you.  Best wishes in that regard.

      Mikey
