I had the symptoms for a UTI and they went away but now they're back

Last week I came down with the symptoms of a UTI, I've had one before and just flushed it out with water so decided to try this before going to the doctors. After I'd had it for a few days there was no visible blood in the urine but when I wiped it was slightly red as if blood might be present. I'm at university and was coming home the next day so decided to leave it and go to the doctors when I was back at home. By the time I got home all symptoms had gone including the blood so I decided to leave it. Now a few days later some of the symptoms have flared back up but there has so far been no sign of blood. Do I make an emergency appointment at the doctors or should I wait a few days to see whether it goes away on its own?

I would make an appointment with your doctor. Take a sample or you can do one at the doctors then they can test for infection and give you antibiotics if needed. At least that would put your mind at rest.

    Hi Rachel,

I would make an appointment and go. If you are showing all the symptoms again you won't always see traces of blood so best to get it checked. I've suffered for over 3yrs now and each bout I've had has been different so I wouldn't hesitate!

    Good luck.

I would absolutely go to the doctors and take a sample to be checked.  If they culture it and see what it actually is (if anything) then you'll know you're getting the right treatment.  As the other replies say, each infection can be different, and there isn't always blood.

Make sure the doc knows you just want to be sure and don't let him give you an antibiotic 'just in case'.  If the doc is certain it's an infection that's ok.  Just never let anyone give you a prescription for an antibiotic called Ciprofloxacin, or it's  relative levofloxacin (or any of 3 others ending in -floxacin).  They're very strong antibiotics, but often given for a simple UTI so beware.
