I have a cold and have ringing in my ears, should I be worried?

I have a cold and have had a fever in the past few days, I also have a chesty cough. Occasionally, I will get this loud, deep, subdued buzzing in my right ear, I also have blocked ears and have had the ringing in the other ear but only once. The ringing started the night I had an ear ache in the ear and if I turn my head to that ear facing up, it goes away. Does anyone know what this is or how to get rid of it or do I just have to leave it?

    Hi Heather,

With any luck your symptoms will be down to your cough and cold but if they persist after you are better then the ringing could be due to you having ear ache so it would be a good idea to have this checked out by your GP. My ringing/buzzing started when I suffered an ear infection and even now that the infection is cleared I am left with the annoying noises. These are worse when I get a cold but are there all the time so I am trying to live with this by listening to calming/meditation music whilst getting to sleep and keeping positive which is not always easy but I am getting there. Maybe one morning I shall wake up and the noises will gone, I live in hope but in case they do not go away I will keep trying to put up with it.

    All the best to you.

I have had it since 2010. I can only hear it when there is no noise, but when I have a cold i can hear it louder and it's all day long until about a week after my cold. Hang in there, try to sleep with a TV or fan on and it'll pass in a couple weeks.
