I have a 'flare' for holidays!

GREAT! I am having a major flare just as I'm about to head off on holiday for a month. Interestingly, I was diagnosed on my return from holiday last year. I thought holidays were supposed to be relaxing - clearly my body thinks they are a stressful event!

Anyway, we are spending a month in our 4wd caravan - mostly 'off the grid' travelling around NSW and Victoria (all you pommies and yanks will have to look it up!). I'm looking forward to doing nothing. Well.... that depends on your definition of nothing.....a whole month of not having to drag my sorry butt out of bed and go to work...every.single.day.

I had managed to get my pred does down to 11mg a day, but my CRP rates have not budged in the 11 months of testing. Back up to 15mg and it's not quite controllilng the flare - I have some pain and a lot of stiffness and fatigue.....(yes, I know the pred doesn't fix stiffness and fatigue), so I'm thinking of trying 20mg for a few days to try and knock it on the head.

Hit it hard and if it takes 20mg then so be it.

If 20mg does not hold it - then you need medics - that is reality.

By the way you live in a country that started Bowen and has exported it around the world and it helps many people with PMR.  No it doesn't cure, it just makes the stiffness and pain lessen and it also helps the fatigue.   I call it 'white witch craft.  Put Tom Bowen in your search engine.

Having my first Bowen therapy next week! I will see how it goes then ask for some pred. I am fed up with the myalgia etc.

I just came back from a 2 week trip to Southeast Asia. Started the trip and 7 1/2 mgs and upped it to 10 during the first few days. Time change screwed me up, so I figured 10 mg split morning and night would balance me. Worked out fine and will start the .5 decrease when I get back home to Florida(visiting my kids in LA now). Do yourself a favor and increase it so you feel better!

Enjoy all that lovely outback and good weather and relax. It did take me 3 weeks to recover from my holiday, but it did not occur to me to increase my pred at the time. Hope it works for you.

    bother,

I don't know how you do your 4wd'ing but we had to reduce the average km/day. Travel one day, rest the next and maybe the next. Pacing ourselves.

      That's the plan Julian!

Mr Flip 'blames' me for the slower pace we take these days, but I know he actually enjoys it more than trying to do to much..... (we are both still in our 50s and hadn't quite learned to slow down for ourselves until PMR hit me).

thanks everyone, I will increase to 20mg for the next week and see how it goes, I really don't want to be in pain and not able to enjoy 'doing nothing' lol

I've been there - I have a fair idea where you are! We drove from Brisbane to Melbourne via Sydney - Coffs Harbour (with a wonderful gluten-free chocolate cake) and Narooma (meeting the locals eating schnitzel at the golf club) are still very vivid memories! Would have loved to have done it all in a camper but there wasn't time - we were still working then.

The pred should help the stiffness because it improves the blood flow to the muscles. I wonder if there is something else going on - you can have more than 1  thing (ever cheerful me!).

I'm supporting lodger on Bowen - it might be just the thing for the stiffness.

    Have a lovely holiday!

When I was working, I always felt ill for the first few days of my holidays. Something to do with adrenalin working overtime leading up to the break, trying to get everything done before the holiday. Then when I finally started to relax, my body gave in and I felt flu'ey fir a couple of days.

    Have a great holiday!

I am so sorry that you have a flare up, unfortunatly stress is stress. I am going on holiday to Turkey on the 7th of November I was doing very well until last Wednesday and I had to have my beautiful cat put to sleep. You can imagine that stress was high before with planning and packing. I have had a major flair up. I am back to 40mg the Dr wanted me to go back up to 60mg but I can't put up with going back to 60mg again. So have agreed to 40mg while I am in Turkey. I have GCA and PMR so the headaches are back I have gone down to 8mg twice now in the past 6 months. I am afraid that it's the problem with the disease. Go and enjoy your holiday and relax them come home and start again. Good luck and have a great holiday. xx

All has been said but wanted to wish you a great holiday!!  Give it a good hit and once you can relax I bet you'll be able to get back to your regular dose.  The preparation and first days settling in are always stressful.

We just met some Aussie's and talked about the wonderful places to see and I'm envious you have such a beautiful country to play in.

    Hugs,

Know where you're coming from, I booked a cruise in June last and in August was diagnised with PMR,   The pain was managable as long as I did nothing so was looking forward to doing nothing for 3 weeks.   My GP advised me to drop 2.5mgs instead of 1.25mg a week before I was due to leave then and all hell broke loose, I was in immense pain and taken to emergency.   Didn't want to take the chance of it happening on board so I cancelled, As it happened the emergency Doc upped my Prednisone to 25mgs and I have been relatively pain free except for wrists and I can actually do things now like ride a bike, work in my shed, etc.   hope I get my money back.
