I have a random itchy rash/reaction to something and can't work out what it could be... please help!

About 18months ago I was lying on my couch when out of nowhere I started itching around my neck and ear area... it started off like little bugs crawling on my skin and would continue to irritate me for weeks to come to the point where I noticed my skin changing from all the scratching so I made a conscious effort to stop the scratching.

Fast forward 18 months and the problem is still there but nowhere near as severe... the trigger/main area is still around my neck and ears but it's just a mild itch that comes and goes. The strange thing is that recen tly I have connected the itch to other areas of my body (so it's not isolated to the neck or ears) and when I feel the itch I also get a little dimple from on the skin - similar to a mosquito bite. These little dimples can come up anywhere on the body at any time.

Does anyone know what this could be or who would be best to contact? I have spent hundreds of dollars on dermatologists, naturopaths, bicom therapists, kinesiologists but every time I go to someone they tell me it's 'this' or 'that' but they never nail it and certainly noone has come close to curing it 😦 I would love your advice/recommendations as I'm at my whits end to be honest 😦

Sounds like quite a frustrating skin ailment, sorry. Could you be a little more specific as to what tests, diagnostics and recommendations all the specialists you have seen have made? I'm hoping this information might help me (and possibly others) answer you better, because despite your thorough description of the symptoms affecting you, I only have a very vague idea of what might be happening so far.

    Thanks,

    Greg.

      Hi Greg,

      Thank you for your reply.

My naturopath recently mentioned it's gland related seeing the original area is my neck/ear/ but I didn't explore with her further as it was our first session and I was there for a different reason. She is also a nutritionist and went down the diet path which I would be really surprised was it because I've never had any allergies to anything in the 40 years I have been alive.

My Chiro did a kinesiology test and accredited the issue to my intestine needing to release toxins (or something of that nature, I just remember it was connected to the intestine). He put me on GUTRIGHT (a modbiotic) which is a great product however it has not helped.

The bicom lady some time ago thought I had been bitten by something, another bicom lady connected it to my dog (which I doubt as he is a non shedding 5yr old labradoodle who I've never had any issues with before).

The Dermatologist tested me for the 50+ standard allergies and everything came back normal. She gave me steroid cream but that did nothing.

I have an appt in 2 weeks with a herbalist who is going to analyse my blood. I'm hoping she might help but would love to hear your thougths if anything sticks out for you!

      Hi Martina,

Thanks for all the additional information!

I now don't believe you are suffering from a skin ailment, because your dermatologist would likely have known... he just did what most of them do best when there is an itch of unknown origin : prescribe a steroid cream.

At this point in time, I would say your naturopath is probably the one who has come the closest to being on an interesting track, because anatomically, we do have lymph nodes right below the ear and along the neck; and there are also salivary glands in that general area. Just 2 years ago, I had an issue with pain and swelling straight below my right ear and along the neck (however, no itching or crawling virtual bugs as in your case); I also felt unusually weak and tired overall, for a few days. A doctor friend of mine touched the area during a dinner with some friends; he confirmed there was a seriously swollen lymph node along my neck and below my ear. He offered to prescribe an antibiotic, but I decided to take a chance and wait it out for a few days. In the end, it was likely viral, as the whole issue just went away like a common flu, and hasn't come back since. That's how I found out about these anatomical details in that general area.

Perhaps the best thing you should do next is just to see a general physician who will likely investigate further those lymph nodes/glands along the neck for a potential pathology; he might even refer you to a different specialist, if he feels it is required. In the end, if no pathology is discovered, you might want to investigate deep within yourself, any manageable sources of stress in your life that could lead to these unusual symptoms. Our minds do have the power to create unusual symptoms when there is no obvious disease, and the sources of stress in the world are unfortunately plentiful!

      All the best,

      Greg.

I have got to be honest but if you have seen dermatologists, naturopaths, bicom therapists, kinesiologists .... face to face, it is unlikely that people on this forum who are mostly amateurs can answer your question if the professionals cannot.
