I have a rude/condescending specialist treating Cotton Wool Spot Lesion w/ IBS

imageI'm 34 and having difficulty with an Ophthalmologist. I was recently diagnosed with Crohn's Colitis and after a month of treatment with Mezavant I noticed a defect in my right eye, which was diagnosed as a lesion called a Cotton Wool Spot. I'm not diabetic and I do not have hypertension.

When I saw the ophthalmologist at Calgary Gimbel eye center, my conversation w/ my Dr. went like this:

RH: "So how does the lesion look now? Is it any smaller or bigger?"

KW: "Irrelevant"

RH: "Uh, okay... the defect is changing shape, it's bigger but less noticable, and I cannot tell if it's getting better or worse though"

KW: "We expect this to evolve"

RH: "Okay... what might be the cause this lesion?"

KW: "Asking this question is like cutting your arm then years later going to a doctor with a scar on your arm and asking him 'What gave me this scar?'"

I'm pretty sure that something growing in my eye, permanently damaging my vision, is not irrelevant. I also think it's absurd for a professional to give me one-word responses yet go out of his way to tell me how stupid he thinks my question is for what might cause a growth on my retina.

Anyways, I'm in distress over my condition, how I was treated and not getting answers as to whether my condition is getting better or worse. The specialist seems to reserve the right to not discuss my OCT's with me to tell me the status of the lesion. For my blindspot test he said: "Things look fine. You're well within a single standard deviation" for my blindspot test which confirmed my eye has a blindspot where the lesion is. I believe his behavior is borderline malicious, I don't trust him and I think next time I see him I'll be more assertive and might decline to be treated any further by him depending on how he treats me.

I told my family doctor about my experience with the ophthalmologist and all he said was "Sorry you went through that".

I could be going blind and I'm just a 30-second problem for an ophthalmologist.

If he is not going to share your results with you then I would request the results. They are your medical records and you have every right to them. I'm not sure why some doctors are like this, it is very unfortunate. I would find a new eye doctor that will explain things in detail. You should be able to ask as many questions as you want and get them answered. You need a doctor you can trust! Best of luck.
