About a month ago my head started itching. Hair loss quickly followed. Its getting worse with almost unbearable itching & the hair loss is extremely depressing. I am female & never thought I'd be going bald. Help!

Hi, a sudden onset of the skin problems you are describing could be due to a contact allergy. The most potent chemicals that can potentially cause an irritation of the scalp are found in hair dyes. Did you recently dye, straighten, or bleach your hair? You could also be allergic to a hair product like shampoo, conditioner, etc.

A hair weave can also cause problems if it is too tight (traction alopecia).

Does it affect the whole scalp? How does the skin look like? Is it oozing pus? Do you have lesions?

I don't color, perm or straighten my hair. I did however change shampoos several weeks before it started. No pus no lesions. Just beet red , itching, burning & falling hair. I have since switched back to my old shampoo.

I forgot to ask, have you seen a dermatologist?

Saw one this morning. Said it was seborrhea. Gave me a couple of creams to try. Said he wasn't sure about the hair coming back ( or if itvwould continue to fall out) as the condition has no cure but tends to recur.

Hope you find the link below useful.

Give the medication that was prescribed a go and see how it goes. Your scalp should improve in just a few days.

Just for your information: You can have seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) and a contact allergy at the same time. Skin that is already irritated by an allergen is more prone to get a flare-up of SD.

As such I would advise you to stick to hair products that you tolerate well. You could try a very mild sulfate free shampoo as well.

You might have to change your hair care routine a bit to prevent or minimise the effect of SD in the future. What worked well for me over the years is zinc pyrithione. You can buy it as a 0.125% spray. Incidentally, it is also the active ingredient in Head and Shoulders conditioner. (It has to be the conditioner, I do not recommend the shampoo.) I apply some conditioner to the affected skin area, leave it on for up to 5 minutes and rinse it off with lukewarm water. If you apply it to inflamed (red) skin it might sting a little bit (for a few minutes) but I am fine with it since it also helps alleviate the itching sensation.

Btw, when I had a flare-up of SD with itchy skin I found more hairs than usual in the drain. However, at least for me this was only temporary shedding and I did not have permantent hair loss.

Hey, how's the treatment going? I suffer from some similar sh*t and still no solution.

Been a rotten 4 months. I have a softball sized bald area which i have tried bunches of natural & prescription remedies. I am using ketoconazle shampoo every other day & a dandruff shampoo on the off days. Also ketoconzale cream every night & a topical steroid twice a day. Also was prescribed terbinafine but have not taken it yet as the side effects sound scary. I thought it was getting better ( even saw a few new hairs) but 2 days ago the intense itching started again. Very depressing being a bald woman. I may have to try the terbinafine.

Well, my dumb*ss dermatologist made me take Accutane for months, which is even worse than that, because he thought I had some kind of chronic seborrheic dermatitis. Now I got prescribed terbinafine as well and I will probably start taking it next week. Hope it works.

Terbinafine did not work for me. I developed severe headaches & lost my taste. And lost a bunch of hair in places that weren't affected. No itching no redness no hair. Looked up the side effects & they were all listed. Why would you give someone with hair loss a drug that CAUSES hair loss. I still using th

Hi Windywoo3007, sorry to hear that you are still having problems with your scalp and hair.

I was just wondering, how did your dermatologist determine that you have a fungal skin infection. Did he take a swab and grow a culture? Or was is just a let's see if it works approach? If it was indeed a fungal infection then it is very unusual that antifungals did not help at all?

You mentioned softball sized bald areas. Have a look at the leaflet about alopecia areata.

My wife had problems with hair loss and was given an appointment at a hair loss clinic. You could get the advice of a dermatologist that specialises in hair loss.

Btw, it turned out that my wife had something called telogen effluvium that was most likely caused by a course of medication (taken about 3 months previous to the onset of the hair loss). She lost nearly all her hair and the bald patches were as smooth as the palm of the hand. It started regrowing after about a year and now her hair is normal again.

The hair in the softball sized area is regrowing. Still smooth & bald on the sides. I believe the lamasil caused the fallout on the sides &,seborreha was on the crown. My dermatologist did not grow a culture , it was a kind of let's try this. Anyway he requested another blood test to check thyroid which was checked in February when it all started. Normal of course. So he has released me & told me to take biotin forte' which I have just started on & I also just switched to a biotin shampoo( a natural product made by Mill Creek. My remaining hair took a real beating from all the chemicals. It sort of gave it a metallic look & bleached most of the color out so I am conditioning like crazy. I guess I'm in remission. Sure hope the next episode isn't this bad. 😕
