I have been diagnosed with a submandibular salivary gland stone, 1cm in diameter located inside the gland itself. Specialist recommendation is surgery to remove gland and stone. Not recommended is removal by ultra sound (breaking up the stone) as this is only 40% successful and there is a risk of breaking teeth in the process. Removal of the stone by 'basket' treatment, inserting 'basket' into the gland from inside the mouth and drawing out the stone, would not be effective in my case because the stone is right inside the gland and not in the gland duct. I experience swelling and some discomfort when eating. The swelling reduces quite soon after eating but a small lump can always be seen under my jaw. If I come down with a cold or am feeling generally under the weather, the swelling seems to be more apparent.
I have had the stone for about 2 years and have decided to have the gland removed by surgery. Can anyone who has undergone this operation please contact me about their experience.
