"I created this account just to share my story and confirm that taking Acetyl-L-Carnitine helped me rapidly increase my TSH levels. I had liver damage from Methimazole (toxic hepatitis) and had to find a solution to rapidly reduce the dose or else I had to have a surgery/radioactive treatment. I researched on the Internet and with the help of Glutathione and Silibinin( for the liver ) , and Methimazole (5mg) with Acetyl-L-Carnitine in 3 weeks I reduced the level of transaminases and increased my TSH from 0.04 to 2.53. This allowed me to reduce the Methimazole dose to 2.5 mg per day, which helped me restore normal liver function. The doses were set up with the help of a gastroenterologist ( for the liver) and endocrinologist. The doctors were skeptical, but ok with me taking the pills because they couldn't hurt my liver. So, in case someone has the same problem as I had, I would recommend this treatment that saved me from almost certain surgery.

Thank you @linda187 for your messages. I still don't understand why 3 endocrinologists did not know about this, but it helped me so I'm hoping it will also help other people."

So I had posted to this Board about the success I had using Regular L-Carnitine and then Acetyl-L-Carnitine as a result of seeing a Medical Research article in an Endocrinology Medical Journal on the benefits of using Regular L-Carnitine in hyperthyroid disease. It helped my in my recovery. My hyperthyroidism was caught relatively early and I was put on a dose of Methimazole of 10 mg. While this normalized my Free T3 and T4, my TSH remained at less than 0.001 for two years until I saw that article. After starting the regular L-Carnitine my TSH rose to 0.12 and stayed there. So I experimented with other Carnitines and tried 1000 mg of Regular L-Carnitine and 1,000 mg of Acetyl L-Carnitine and it raised my TSH well into the normal range at 0.70 and then the highest it went to was 2.5 and I made adjustments as I prefer it between 1.0 and 2.0. My Free T3 and T4 dropped to the bottom of the range but never went out of range because I was very careful about frequent blood testing and adjusting dosages of the supplements. My doc would adjust my Methimazole dose decreasing in small amounts of 2.5 mg at a time. Before I tried this I asked my boss who was a Genetic Metabolic specialist about the article as he treated some metabolic diseases with L-Carnitine, and he told me that it wouldn't hurt me. That said, I had some symptoms on the Acetyl like more sensitive hearing but I still thought it was worth it because Acetyl-L-Carnitine especially crosses the blood-brain barrier and carried my meds and other supplements with it across the blood-brain barrier, making it unnecessary to take as high a dose as I was on. However, many patients who just took these supplements without careful, frequent monitoring and adjusting went very hypo, very fast. Hyperthyroid patients lose a lot of vitamins, minerals and amino acids while running hyper and if you can get tested for these and replace deficits it is helpful to recovery. I found out by accident that I was deficient in Vitamin D which is very essential for good thyroid functioning. I was also deficient in Magnesium so supplemented with this as well. After normalizing my values 2 years after I was diagnosed, I was on a low dose of Methimazole of 2.5 mg every other day for the next 8 years along with low doses of supplements. I finally discontinued the Methimazole a year ago and was stable until recently when I had a reaction to a stressful incident and my TSH dropped to 0.70 (still normal but i called my Endo). He suggested I just go back on the Regular L-Carnitine which i have done at 500 mg a day and my TSH rose again to over 1.0. My antibodies were undetectable at the time of discontinuance of meds.
