Hello all, I have just been told by my doctor that i have a high cholesterol. Im very confused, I am Vegan, and I do not smoke or drink alcohal.

My doctor said it may help if I lose a little weight, even though I am not overweight but I could spare a few pounds.

Any suggestions as to why this came back high please??

    How high?

We've had friends for dinner tonight and one was saying that her cholesterol was recently found to be high at 7.2.  She started taking the daily Benecol drink and within a very very short time, her next cholesterol test had dropped by 10 points to 6.2!

You can lower your bad cholesterol by eating monounsaturated fats found in things like avacado, olive oil, nuts, and other natural oils. What was your good cholesterol level? I am curious as to what you are eating to cause high cholesterol. Coconut and coconut oil has saturated fats, maybe that could be it? Also, contrary to popular belief, eggs can lower how much cholesterol your body makes, look it up. I know you're vegan, but you may be willing to try that.

Doctors always attribute cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc to weight. I wouldn't worry about losing weight, just worry about eating more good fats and try to find out what bad fats you could be eating.

Also, maybe the test isn't accurate? You could always take another one.

Also, how long have you been vegan?

Hello Mssteed, I have been Vegan about 5 years, and vegetarian for 30. thank you so much for your helpful advise. I will try to eat avocados a bit more as I only occasionaly eat them. My level was 6.6 I was told, not sure what my good cholesteral level was, ill find out smile . Thank you for mentioning the egg but I dont actually like them. The doctor did say if there was a family history of cholesteral problems, and I found out yesterday that both my mum and dad have the problem, so may be hiredatary. I am doing daily exercise now to see how that helps smile

I was going to say that it can be genetic. It seems like you are eating healthy, so my guess would be that it probably is from your parents. Not much you can do about that but get plenty of good fats in and keep up the good work. :D
