I have been using Tibolone (Livial) for three years now....

Posted , 41 users are following.

I have been using Tibolone (Livial) for three years now. I previously used HRT patches but due to the length of time I had been using my GP suggested that Tibolone would be better for me.

I have had previous hysterectomy and bowel resection due to Endeometriosis.

I am now 49 years of age and HRT started at approx 29 years old. I had one son at the age of 27 and had a miscarriage at age 29 when I was 5 months pregnant.

I have some concerns regarding Livial as I am currently experiencing -

Joint Pain

Severe Muscle Pain

Some Visual blurring

Fluid retention

Very low metabolism (despite trying very hard to motivate and move around as much as possible)

Require rest and sleep often

Unexplained weight gain or fluid retention ?

I have been attending my GP for the last 4 months back and forth with muscle and joint problems and also some swelling in the neck area.

Some blood tests have been done but at the moment nothing has been found. Apparently Thyroid results are normal.

A swelling ocurred on the lower right side of my neck around early February. I have not to date received a scan to diagnose the problem despite repeated visits to the practice and also visiting a private consultant in Murrayfield Edinburgh who wrote to the GP practive a number of weeks ago and who recomended that this should be done.

I was suspicious at first that I had a thyroid problem but the blood results do not show.

My concern therefore now is that Livial is causing my symptoms and I need to establish whether this is the cause or not and whether to continue with livial or not under the circumstances.

Visiting the web site has been of benefit to me in order that I can read current research on Livial as I am extremely concerned that I have gone from a fit well active person to the current pain and progressive problems I am now experiencing.

Regards.

It's now 3 months since I stopped taking Livial, I've lost 6 kilos, the aches and pains in my joints have gone, and the foggy brain is almost back to it's normal self. Surrey Woman, I'm another one who never made the connection with Livial. I thought it was my age causing me to drag myself out of bed every morning. And my doctor assured me that Livial was the "best available" with no side effects. I didn't go off it gradually, I just stopped, it felt like about 8 weeks before it was all out of my system though. Good luck.

Sounds like you're doing well Maria, keep us posted.

Having completed further research i now wonder if my fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue may be linked to adrenal fatigue. I have replaced Livial with oestrogel now for about5 weeks and the brain fog is definitely lifting although painful joints and muscles continues. It may be worth looking up the symptoms of adrenal fatigue to see if it applies to others.

    Good evening ladies.

I had a total hysterectomy at 39 and endometrial cancer was found in the uterus and so 6 months later I had my ovaries removed to reduce the risk of the cancer returning elsewhere. I was thrown into a horrendous menopause literally as soon as I had come round from the surgery.

My consultant suggested I start taking Livial Tibolene.

I had been warned prior to my hysterectomy that it would probably take up to 5 years to completely feel like my normal self and so when i started to feel the leg pains, numbness in joints, pins and needles, neck pain, agony in my toes when walking any distance, i put it down to the body having to deal with such severe surgery.

Thank god for this forum!! I too now believe that its the Livial that is causing these problems. I too have gained weight mainly around my tummy, even though I am trying to be careful about what I eat and have cut way back on alcohol.

I have my final 6 monthly appt with my consultant on the 19th February which will bring me to the end of 5 years of check ups......I will be having a very serious conversation wtih him about where i go from here re: Livial. I ant to stop but am afraid of what will happen! I have just turned 44 yrs of age but sometimes hobble around like my 69 year old father.

Will up date after my appt. Take care all.

    Hello ladies,

My original post was above, but i forgot my login!! lol. Maybe that is another side affect or Livial Tibolene.

Well, I have had the all clear after 5 years and I had a great chat with my consultant about coming off the Livial. He suggested I gradually wean myself off it but me being a stubborn so and so.....I went 'cold turkey'!! Its been 2 weeks today and i have to agree with a lot of ladies that i feel great. The niggling and quite frankly sometimes extremely painful jab in my neck has gone, my knee joints are so much freer and less swollen. My ankles and feet do not swell up when i'm sat down at work all day and I don't get the excruating pain down the outside of my leg when i walk.

To top it all, I have had very few sweats!! Roll on my 50's when this is all behind me .

I wish you all well, take care

    Hi ladies,

feel so happy after reading these reviews on livial, I had a total hysterectomy nov 1st 2012 and started on livial tibolone 4 wks later, everything seemed to be fine apart from a funny dry feeling all the time on my tongue which i thought i could live with, until the last month ive been struggling so much with shoulder pain, hip pain going into my bottom,my knees are so painful and ive been struggling to walk on my feet,my elbows and wrists are so painful its so hard to pick anything heavy up like the kettle, milk bottle etc,ive been to my doctors twice ive had blood tests which have come back normal, and ive mensioned these tablets but they don't seem to listen to me,ive been given amitriptyline tablets for fibromyalgia. I woke up this morning in more pain than ever in the lower part of my back/bottom i just dont know what to do after reading these reports from other ladies,do i stop the tablets or not,im so tired now feel like ive got no energy at all. hope theres a result very soon on these tablets.

    Hello Alison,

I am so sorry to hear another lady suffering as we all have been. Obviously for some, it works well but there seems to be so much bad press about the Livial from actual uses not doctors etc......unless you take it and experience how can they comment?!

I have been off it for 3 weeks now and I still have never felt better. I have also lost 8lb in weight which I'm putting down to lack of water retention now!!

My back/hip and bottom pain are almost gone and I can walk so much further than I could before when I was on Livial and this is in only 3 weeks!!! So much happier in myself and the fog has definately lifted.

I can't tell you what to do Alison but I would seriously try giving a couple of weeks break a go and see how you.

Yes I have more night sweats (sleep with the window opena little seems to lesten me waking up more often and I have a couple more through the day but they last for a min or 2......I can handle that.

Good luck with whatever you decide, I'd love tohear how you get on.

    Take care,

    Emma

Few I thought I was a hopeless case!!

I had a sub total hysterectomy 12 years ago and am waiting to have my ovaries removed - in the interim I've been prescribed Zoladex injections (every 28 days) and Livial tablets. Initially I felt great but as the time has gone on I feel like I'm permanently going down with the flu. Achy limbs, foggy head and absolutely knackered all the time - my 80 year old mom can get more done in a day than me I'm only 42.

I have a good GP so I'm getting myself down there to see if there's any alternatives - hopefully my surgery date won't be too long.

    Will keep you posted

Thanks to you all - Dx

    Hi Girls

I'm from Surrey, England, live in Sydney, Australia and am 50, via IVF I believe I experienced the menopause prematurely. After having my doctor prescribe at 48 Yas (the pill) for the last 18 months, which I was not happy with, having never taken it before, I wanted to review my options as I was unexpectedly tired and didn't believe a contraceptive was the ideal medication for my hot sweats, sleeping problems, and fatigue.

I've nearly finished my 2nd month of Livial and almost instantly have discovered symptoms I believe are from Livial. My 12B boobs shrunk to 12 -A! my stomach and legs swelled, probably by about 3kgs. OK my tiredness has gone and gone also, the hot sweats. I sleep through the night on the whole but have these symptoms:

Joint pain in my fingers, not even the ones that I broke years ago. My hip bursitis that was treated 6 years and went completely is now back not niggling, but constant. What feels like sinis headache is on and off and after having laser eye surgery 4 years ago, one eye gets blurry quite regularly. Neck hurts and I also had my left shoulder treated with cortisone for frozen shoulder which also went. So having been told that Livial is good for Osteoporosis I find out its basically testosterone and also a steroid. "Oh my god I'm on 'Roids". Well add to the injury the insult of having to pay $56.00 per pack for 30 days as it's not on the pharmaceutical benefit scheme. I am trying to weigh up the pros and cons as my mood is very good with Livial. My memory has improved but I just don't want to go down the "lane of pain" pardon the pun.

It's early days, but was on holiday last month and saw the video, I do look chunky from the waist down with very swollen ankles, and am concerned this is just the beginning. I have the energy, so went for a family jog at the weekend and now the hip's plaguing me.

I think I'll discontinue and will check back in on this in a couple of weeks.

Hi Bex, nice to hear from you. So many of your symptoms are similar to mine.

I had joint pain everywhere - especially in the hands and hips. I was diagnosed with arthritis, but the joint pain disappeared when I stopped taking Livial, and has not returned.

Regular headaches and blurry vision in both eyes, I was routinely taking Panadol with my breakfast! This has also stopped since I went off Livial.

I had both shoulders injected with cortisone, since going off Livial I haven't had a day's trouble with my shoulders.

I also had a big problem with numbness in my limbs, and regularly experienced numb fingers. This has stopped since I've gone off Livial.

I must tell you that some of the "side-effects" took a long time to wear off. I don't think my old energy levels came back for about 6 months. It must take ages for the drug to be fully gone from your system.

    Good luck!

    Hi Kim

I have been off the livial for 5 days so far and the change is positive. I still have the same energy levels as I did whilst on livial. I have improved vision in the specific eye that was blurry. I also have hardly any paid in the fingers that got painful. And most concerning, probably the one reason alone that made me cease using livial were the punching throbbing pains in my head that moved around. They literally went the moment I stopped. I am passing more fluid, which I presume is that fluid no longer being retained and my back hurts less. All good news so far.

I was prescribed Livial to counteract problems associated with long term Prostap injections and on reading the side effect leaflets recently they both appear to cause similar side effects. Apart from a significant problem with the Prostap 3 injection in December 2012 I managed to bumble along quite nicely on monthly Prostap until my last injection on 2 July 2013.

I started with severe headaches, which lasted a couple of days on 3 July 2013. My BP was rarised so I emailed my Consultant Gynaecologist and on his recommendation, ceased Livial from 24 July 2013 and I am not having my planned Prostap injection on 30 July 2013. I have to admit that I am not looking forward to the next few days as my body works on a strict 28 day cycle and it knows exactly when I need another injection but heigh ho . . . I had to give it a go as I couldn't cope with such intense, long lasting headaches.

I have had all of the side effects described by others and my GP did ask if I thought the side effects were worth it in March 2013 ! At the time I said yes because the pain from my Ovarian Entrapment Syndrome was significant and kept me awake at night but I am now of the opinion that pain at night may be better than 2 days of HRT related headaches.

I have had a real problem with neck pain and had assumed it was due to the torn disc I have had since my hysterectomy but after reading posts on here it was good to be able to put it down to Livial.

I have bought myself a LadyCare Magnet, which is supposed to be good for ladies going through the menopause and I know of at least 2 people whose lives have been transformed since trying it so I thought I would share it on here. I am waiting until I see my GP on Tuesday before I start wearing the one I bought as it does advise that you discuss with your GP, if you have raised blood pressure. Has anyone else tried the magnet and if so did you have any success with it ?

I am 57 had a hysterectomy 13 years ago and started taking livial 7 yrs ago hot flushes stopped but gained weight last 3 yrs over a stone! and was diagnosed with Rhumatoid Arthritis, painful fingers and feet , was on Methotrixate but that was awful, now on Sulfazalasine, also had low thyroid so am on thyroxine, and thyroid has leveled out but Dr advised to stay on this as levels could drop again if I come off , have more energy but consultant wanted me to come off livial as I have high prolactin hormone levels. I reduced the dose for couple of weeks and then came off completely, I think it was too soon , I have hot flushes back day and night, drinking loads of water and waking several times in the night, but have lost 7 pounds, so am really pleased about that. Am wondering what pain symptoms are down to the livial, am pleased to have found this forum, has anyone else had similar symptoms?
