I have Bipolar, which was just diagnosed 5/2/07. I did already have the idea that this is why I have felt really good for weeks or months and the hit rock bottom for months after. When you hit the bottom you can't come up and your wonderful world falls apart and everyone you love falls with you, but when you are high you are a high as you can be and it feels good. You want to get in your car and drive to the end of the earth, the rock music comes out, you can't sleep, the paranoia gets out of control and you convince yourself that you are been watched and followed everywhere but you can never see who is following you or watching you. You become obsessed with things that you would have previously never cared for and you work faster than you have before, knocking the socks of everyone with your speed and stamina.

I have to say that I hated this illness at one point, but I think it grows on you and you live it the best way you see fit. I am not sure about the lithium I have only been on it for 5 days now and have seen a slight bit of difference but don't know how it works or how long it takes to work. I am off for my blood test on Monday to check the levels, but again I am not sure what happens.

If there is any of you reading this load of rubbish I have just typed and can offer advice about this gift and I call it a gift because we have to keep posative! Don't we!?!?! I will be very grateful to hear from you, because you do feel alone and even though we have loved ones I don't think everyone understands how things really are.

Well thank you for reading and keeps your chins up.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:smile:D:ok:

    Hi there

    I am a classic bipolar and I know something about lithium. It is most commonly used for bipolar but has to be monitored as its effects vary. Most people who take lithium say its good but I take Lamotrigine - its a more sophisticated med than lithium - more targeted in its effects.

    You should look up lamotrigine on patient.uk and decide for yourself if you might swop meds - under your Psych's direction of course.

    Lamotrigine is a sophisticated MOOD STABILISER that works far better - in my opinion - than olde worlde lithium and your Psych will be happy to advise and change if you choose.

    About the paranoia - and can't sleep - and a host of other negatives - in my excellent experience - in the hands of enviable medical advisors - Quetiapine is ideal as a sedative and general positive influence - guarenteeing pleasant dreams and stable daytime moods.

    You can look this up on patient.uk also - but talk to your Psych - with an informed opinion - and you will probably enjoy the stability I feel today after a year of adjusting my meds

    Hello S.W.

    Because Mark is taking Lamotrugine which works far better for him than Lithium that does not mean that Lithium will not work for you, it also depends on how you and your body adapts to the medication. There are many many many people in the world with Bipolar Disorder who may have the same symptoms but all take different meds. I have had Bipolar Disorder since 1996 and I have been through many many different meds. At present I am on EPILIM and Seroquel and they work perfect for me. I have been on these 2 meds for 2 almost years now and i am very comfortable with them. One of the other things in life which makes persons with Bipolar Disorders stay well is the fact that they have Love and Support from Family and Love ones. Sometimes the fact that someone cares enough to be there for you works better than any medication although you still have to take it.

    Stay well, take your meds and keep you doctor appointments.
